Prefaceix• Provide a direction for future policy change and collective improvement toensure sustainability of the sector• Mitigate negative public perceptions of aquacultureWe set out to choose the list of success stories that was initially developed at theRayong Thailand workshop through a consensus-based process by the “experiencedgroup” assembled in Rayong. These cases were chosen to reflect activitiesthat have impacted on livelihoods of different socioeconomic groups and havestrongly contributed to aquaculture sustainability in Asia. This group promoted andendorsed the concept that more needs to be achieved to emphasize how aquaculturein Asia has been evolving particularly in terms of sustainability concerns, whileattempting to meet the market opportunities and the food/nutrition gap that is developingin this region.Implementation Strategy and ImpactsIt is expected that the “success stories” project, apart from its immediate impacts ondecision makers, will also lead to a variety of other activities that will bring about awider sectoral awareness and adoption of positive lessons learned from the successstories. Such work is neither readily available, nor readily accessible at present in thepublished literature. Also, we hope that the project will stimulate a number of crossleveland cross-sectoral processes such as, horizontal (community to community)and vertical (community/village, district, state, national) level changes and variousdialogue processes such as exchanges, farmer to farmer visits, workshops, trainingprograms as part of the continued learning from the success program.Bangkok, ThailandOttawa, CanadaSena S.
