ForewordWorld aquaculture has grown tremendously during the last 50 years, from less thana million tons in the early 1950s to 51.7 million tons with a value of US $78.8 billionin 2006. While the capture fishery production leveled off in the mid-1980s, theaquaculture sector has maintained an average annual growth rate of 8.7% worldwidesince 1970. Most of the net growth in fish production over the past 20 yearshas come from aquaculture, especially in developing countries. Aquaculture has, infact, been the fastest growing sector for food production, as well for rural livelihoodimprovement and agricultural income earning worldwide for the past two decades.It is foreseen that this trend will continue and aquaculture will be the major, if notthe only, contributor to the fish supply to meet the increasing demand of the growingpopulation in decades to come.Asia is by far the world’s leader in aquaculture production, producing more than80% of the world’s total aquaculture output in 2006. Though much has been saidabout Asian aquaculture, much more is yet to be understood about the reasons andfactors behind such a spectacular development. It is worthy to conduct such ananalysis of reasons conducive to the sustainable development of the industry, andto evaluate ways whereby these success stories of sustainable and lucrative aquaculturepractices could be beneficial for other countries with aquaculture potential.It is believed by many that there is a need to document “success stories” in aquaculture,and to advise the policy makers and practitioners, as well as the generalpublic, about the positive impact of aquaculture development in supporting rurallivelihood and economic development, particularly in developing countries.A recent FAO global study on constraints facing aquaculture found some oppositionfor its future development. In some cases, the cause of the opposition is aresult of misinformation. The public misperception on aquaculture has occurred insome areas, leading to negative impacts on local socioeconomic development andrational use of resources. In some instances, such attitudes and perceptions towardaquaculture have influenced decision-makers, pressuring them to regulate and oftento halt the expansion of aquaculture. The successful experiences and lessonslearned could help to bring about policy changes, particularly in emerging aquaculturenations to pursue aquaculture development in a sustainable and an environment-friendlymanner. Building awareness on success stories and highlighting thepositive impact of aquaculture were considered important. The practical countryv
