Principles of Advertising (3)A general survey of the field of advertising.Includes focus on conception and execution ofcreative, effective advertising for print, online, andbroadcast media. Introduces stategic planning,media selection, buyer behavior, campaigns, waysto measure advertising effectiveness, and careeropportunities. Case studies and prize-winningadvertisements may be included. Prerequisite:CT 2200 or JN 2000 or MK 3000.CT 4180 (JN 4180). Broadcast Journalism (3)A course in gathering, writing and producing newsfor radio and television. Included are skills in interviewing,editing news for broadcast and identifyingnews sources. Special problems unique to broadcastjournalism are discussed. Prerequisite: CT 2200and JN 2000 Introduction to Journalism.CT 4220. College-to-Career Transition (2)Seniors/juniors experience a career decision-makingprocess designed to facilitate the college-to-careertransition. Reflecting on their college experience,students will examine their personal work ethic andwill identify their strengths, interests, and workrelatedvalues. Speakers will present job marketinformation. The course will include learningabout the following job research skills: researchingliterature, conducting information interviews,developing a resume, interviewing for a job, andwriting good cover letters. Prerequisite: Junior orSenior standing.CT 4350. Organizational Communication (3)This course provides an orientation into the wayscommunication operates in organizations throughhistorical, philosophical, and theoretical issues.Case study and organizational research are emphasizedfor study of leadership styles; communicationclimates; organizational design, coordination andsymbolism; and communication satisfaction. Prerequisite:CT 2000, CT 2040.CT 4750. Rhetorical Criticism (3)An examination and evaluation of verbal, visualand rhetorical artifacts which are formed due tosocial issues. Emphasis is placed on the relationshipamong the rhetor, the message, the audience, thecultural environment in which they communicate,and their ethical standards. This course is designedto develop critical thinking, listening and visualliteracy. Prerequisite: CT 2000, CT 2040.CT 4860. Seminar in Group Interaction (3)This course will focus on the study of the principlesand processes unique to group situations.Topics will include leadership, followership, grouproles, norms, tasks, social functions, problemsolving,decision making, and conflict resolution.Emphasis is on learning and acquiring group communicationskills, including self-disclosure, conflictmanagement skills, and leadership and followershipskills. Prerequisite: CT 2000, CT 2040.CT 4870. Seminar in Communication Theoryand Research (3)A survey of the contemporary contributions to thestudy of human communication. Evaluation andanalysis are designed to explore what occurs whenhumans communicate and why certain effectsoccur. Survey includes considerations of interpersonal,intercultural, organizational, mass media andrhetorical communication. Prerequisite: CT 2000,CT 2040, junior standing.CT 4880. Research Methodsin Communication (3)This course introduces students to the theory andpractice of social science methods in the field ofcommunication. Students will learn quantitativeand qualitative research methods. Students willlearn to be critical readers of research, and emphasiswill be placed on understanding research andassigning credibility to these findings. Studentswill also learn the importance of conducting andidentifying ethical research. Students will designand conduct their own research including askingresearch questions, developing theoretical explanationsfor communication phenomena, formulatinghypotheses, designing methodologies, analyzingdata, and drawing conclusions about research findings.Students will present findings orally and inwriting. Prerequisite: CT 2000, CT 2040,CT 3000 or CT 4860, senior standing.CT 4890. Seminar in Mass Media (3)Topics vary each semester but may include suchthemes as First Amendment issues, journalisticethics, theories of the effects of mass communication,federal regulation, cultural impact of mediaand global issues in mass communication. Prerequisite:Junior standing.CT 4940. Senior Capstone (3)Independent and collaborative research into majorfocus area; written/oral/artistic presentationsrequired to demonstrate mastery of major area ofstudy. Required to fulfill major. Prerequisite:CT 2000, CT 2040, junior standing.CT 4970. Internship (2-3)Opportunities for students to apply their educationby working in career fields related to a specifictrack in either communication or business communication.Internships may be in business,industry, government and not-for-profit organizations.Locations include Kansas City, St. Louis,and Paris. The Paris internship requires additionalconcurrent course enrollment.
