Health Care Leadership/Health CareManagementHC 6125. Health Systems (3)Students enrolled in the Health Care Leadershipprogram or focus only. Course surveys the majorcomponents and organizational interrelationshipsof the United States health care system. Studentsexamine the various health care organizations(HCOs), personnel issues, delivery systems, policy,and payment mechanisms. This course introducesstudents to the public policy and business practiceissues associated with access, cost and quality.HC 6225. Strategic Analysis for HealthServices (3)Students enrolled in the Health Care Leadershipprogram or focus only. Course employs financialand organizational research methods to analyze situationsfaced by contemporary health service organizations.Through quantitative and qualitative analysis,students learn to apply different techniques tostrategic business decisions. Prerequisite: HC 6125;FN 3000 or FN 5025; MK 3000 or MK 5025.HC 6260. Medical Practice Management (3)Students enrolled in the Health Care Leadershipprogram only. Course surveys the majorcomponents and organizational interrelationshipsof medical practice management in the UnitedStates. Students will examine medical practicebenchmarking, reimbursement, contract analysisand negotiation, operations management, qualitymanagement, budgeting and forecasting in medicalpractice environments. Prerequisites: HC 6125,FN 5025, AC 5025.HC 6325. Policy and Politics of Health Care (3)Students enrolled in the Health Care Leadershipprogram or focus only. Course examines politicalissues affecting contemporary health care servicesby analyzing policy goals, public policy formulationprocesses, and external environments. Analysisblends the use of managerial epidemiology, biostatistics,political and economic analysis, with anunderstanding of public health initiatives. Futurehealth care leaders also gain an appreciation forhow political structures determine interactionswith local and national governments. Prerequisiteor concurrent: HC 6125.HC 6425. Health Care Leadership Capstone (3)Students enrolled in the Health Care Leadershipprogram or focus only. Course integrates core businessconcepts and managerial perspectives masteredearlier in the MBA program. Students write, presentand critique business plans that define organizationalvision, mission, goals, values, structure,systems and strategies for competitive advantageand growth. Student-developed business plansalso describe the management processes by whichgoals and resources allocations will be continuouslymonitored and adapted. Prerequisite or concurrent:HC 6225. This course must be taken as three ofthe last nine credit hours in a Health Care LeadershipMBA student’s program of study.ManagementMG 6100. Leadership and OrganizationalBehavior (3)Students enrolled in the Health Care Leadershipprogram only. Course increases students’ awarenessof organizational processes and practices, includingleadership, management, motivation, morale,group dynamics, interpersonal communications,conflict, and group problem-solving. The courseprovides conceptual insights and behavioral skillsneeded for successful leadership of continuousimprovement in individual, team, and organizationalperformance.MG 6110. Compass Learning Community (1)This course provides an orientation to Rockhurst,HSOM and the MBA program. The distinct traditions,values and principles of Jesuit educationare discussed in light of their connection to theMBA program. Students will receive an introductionto adult learning theory, personal development,business ethics and team building. Studentswill complete a number of assessment instrumentsand begin assignments that will continue to bedeveloped and engaged in subsequent courses.Prerequisite: This course must be taken during thefirst semester of the program.MG 6225. Law and Social Responsibility (3)Students enrolled in the Health Care Leadershipprogram or focus only. Course explores basic businesslaw and regulatory compliance, with a focuson key laws and regulations impacting health care.This course also introduces students to contractingand contracting law pertaining to real estate, ITvendor decisions, medical malpractice, propertyand casualty insurance, and managed care. Studentsexamine how health care leaders integrateregulatory compliance and social responsibility intothe formulation of organizational strategy.MG 6260. Quality Improvement Processesfor Management (3)Performance measurements and quality improvementhave become integral to management.“Report cards” are widely available as tools forevaluating the care and service offered by companiesand by individual employees. It is paramountthat managers understand the meaning andimportance of performance measures, as well ashow to implement quality improvement programsto enhance service and outcomes. This topic areawill help learners to define meaningful qualityparameters; describe quality from the perspectivesof customers, purchasers, regulators and otherstakeholders; and apply basic tools and techniquesof quality improvement.MG 6310. Leadership and OrganizationalBehavior (2)Course increases students’ awareness of organizationalprocesses and practices, including leadership,management, motivation, morale, group dynamics,interpersonal communications, conflict, and groupproblem-solving.
