Teaching Middle and SecondarySchool English (3)Students will explore and analyze a variety of issuesand approaches to the teaching of middle andsecondary school English. Students will develop a unit of study forthe English classroom. This course also requires anon-credit field placement experience. Curriculum, Methods, andAssessment in Secondary Education (3)Building on the various foundations courses in thesecondary certification program, this course focuseson the application of theory to practice as it pertainsto curriculum development, instructional strategies,and assessment practices in secondary classrooms.Specific topics of inquiry will include developmentof curriculum for deep understanding, design ofvarious types of assessments for varied audiences andpurposes, and acquiantance with a range of instructionalstragies appropriate for varied situations andpurposes. There is an emphasis on theuse of concrete learning aids and practical experiencein local elementary school classrooms. Curriculum, Methods, and AssessmentII (Teaching Language Arts, Social Studies andChildren’s Literature) (4)This course will explore and analyze a variety of integratedapproaches in theory and practice in the elementaryschool classroom to teaching reading, writing,speaking, listening and viewing through the integrationof social studies. Students will develop a long-termcurriculum plan that integrates language arts, socialstudies and children’s literature. This course requiresnon-credit field placement experience that analyzescurriculum, assessment and classroom management inthe elementary classroom for grades 1-6.ED 6560 (ED 4560). Teaching Middle and SecondaryForeign Language (3)Students examine the recent findings of linguists,psycholinguists, sociolinguists, cognitive psychologistsand educational theorists in curriculum andmotivation relative to second language learning.The student appraises methods of foreign languageteaching at K-12 level as they relate to proficiency inlistening, reading, writing and speaking, and criticallyanalyzes existing methods and gives rationalefor selection of a preferred method. Additionally,the student works with a practicing professional ata school site. This course requires a non-credit fieldplacement experience. Teaching Middle and SecondarySchool Business Education (3)Students explore and analyze a variety of approachesto the teaching of business education courses at thehigh school level. A major focus is upon the developmentof curriculum, teaching materials and learningactivities appropriate to the business educationcurriculum. The integration of business educationinto the total school curriculum is also emphasizedand experience is provided through on-campusdemonstrations and visits to local school classrooms.Students develop an original plan of study for oneof the business education areas during the course ofthe semester and they develop the ability to createand evaluate curriculum.
