Course DescriptionsNonprofit Leadership StudiesNP 1110. Introduction to NonprofitOrganizations (3)The course is designed to provide a historical andcurrent overview of America’s “third” sector (thenot-for-profit sector), help students identify andexplore social welfare issues, and understand therole of nonprofit organizations in a democraticsociety. A service-learning project will allow studentsto apply theories to a real-world situationand reflect on their work and issues that ariseduring the project.NP 1970. Nonprofit Practicum (1)A supervised, 50-hour volunteer placement with anonprofit agency. The practicum experience providesan ideal opportunity for students to gain skilland knowledge in areas not possible through othercourse work and co-curricular activities. Reflectionactivities enable the student to process theexperience and connect fieldwork with curricularconcepts and themes. Prerequisite or concurrent:NP 1110 and instructor approval.NP 3020. Marketing for NonprofitOrganizations (3)A study of the fundamentals of marketing in anonprofit setting through readings, class lecturesand discussion, and a service learning project.Students learn essential elements of effectiveorganizational marketing; these fundamentals arethen applied in a real life setting as teams of studentsdevelop a marketing plan for a nonprofit.Educational outcomes include the developmentof marketing goals and position statements, theconducting of a marketing audit, development ofmarketing and promotion plans, and the design ofmarket research plans. Prerequisite or concurrent:NP 1110.NP 3050. Foundations of Fundraising andDevelopment (3)An introduction to the principles of philanthropyand fundraising which apply to the managementof a nonprofit agency. Knowledge of the sourcesof philanthropic gifts, causes that receive support,motivations that influence giving, the elements ofa case for support, the essentials of strategic planningand the construction of budgets and relatedfund raising targets. Emphasis is placed upon thehuman behavior aspects of philanthropy and volunteerism.Prerequisite or concurrent: NP 1110.NP 3070. Community Engagement (3)A study of communities and the role of nonprofitorganizations and individuals in those communities.This course explores how leadership for servicecan improve the quality of life and economicvitality of communities. Case studies and a serviceproject are utilized to explore collaborations andpartnerships, public policy and advocacy, socialand civic responsibility, nonprofit partnerships andcollaborative ventures and their potential needs aswell as meeting the needs of individuals and groupsthrough organization and planning. Prerequisite orconcurrent: NP 1110.NP 3090. Volunteer Management and ProgramPlanning for Nonprofit Organizations (3)Designed to introduce theories, research and practicesfor designing and implementing nonprofitorganizational programs and activities, and managingvolunteers who lead, manage and fund them,the course provides students with basic skills andknowledge needed to assume roles as volunteerprogram leaders and managers. The course alsoexplores the motivations and behaviors of volunteersand nonprofit personnel. Service-learningprojects enable students to apply theoretical conceptsin the field and reflect on their implicationson professional practice. Prerequisite or concurrent:NP 1110.NP 4000. Nonprofit Sector Career Planning (1)Designed for students in the last semesters ofundergraduate work, this course will focus onemployment in the nonprofit sector. Careerdevelopment and exploration competencies willbe achieved through a variety of readings andcommunity-based assignments. Prerequisite: NP1110 and senior standing.NP 4010. Administration of NonprofitOrganizations (3)This course provides a comprehensive analysisof the role and function of a professional in themanagement process of a nonprofit organization.Specific topics addressed include: the natureof leadership and management in the nonprofitsector; fundraising and financial management;governance and the respective roles of board, staffand volunteers; the political, economic and interorganizationalenvironment; community relations;needs assessment; and planning and performancemeasurement. Prerequisite: NP 1110.NP 4060. Financial Management of NonprofitOrganizations (3)Understanding the basic concepts of fundingstreams, budgeting and financial statement analysisis essential to building and maintaining a strongorganization. This course examines the principlesand practices of financial and managerial accountingin tax-exempt, charitable organizations.
