EconomicsEC 6000. Managerial Economics (3)Students enrolled in the Health Care Leadershipprogram only. Course explores economic conceptsand analysis for making business decisions. Topicscan include demand and supply, forecasting, competition,sales strategies, production, efficiency,integration, cost and pricing, as well as macro andglobal issues in relation to how they impact businessdecisions and firms. Prerequisite: Six hoursof undergraduate micro and macroeconomics (EC1000 or EC 1050 and EC 2100 or EC 1100), orEC 4550.EC 6300. Competitive Analysis (2)Competitive Analysis applies economic conceptsand ideas to the study of firm and industry performance.It draws upon a number of analytical toolssuch as strategic mapping, survival analysis, gametheory, and transaction cost economics to examinehow and why firms and markets perform andevolve. It examines a number of issues includingthe “make vs. buy” decision process, cooperationvs. competition, changing vertical and horizontalboundaries, and internal vs. external analysis andlead to competitive advantage. Prerequisite: anundergraduate course in microeconomics, a coursein macroeconomics, and a course in statistics.EC 7000. Economic and CompetitiveAnalysis (3)Executive Fellows Program only. This courseexplores the interplay of managerial economics andstrategic management. It is designed to providestudents with an understanding of the competitiveanalysis tools underlying strategy formulation.Based on an analysis of the factors shaping theindustry environment, firms assess their positioningrelative to their rivals, and formulate strategiesin order to achieve a durable competitive advantage.The course covers various topics in strategyformulation, such as product positioning anddifferentiation, diversification, vertical integration,scale and scope, pricing, strategic commitments,entry deterrence, and creative destruction.EC 7150. Economics for Managers (2)For Executive Fellows Program Only. Courseexplores basic macro and micro-economic conceptsthat are critical for managerial analysis ofbusiness problems. Micro topics include demandand supply, forecasting, competition, cost andpricing; Macro concepts that describe issues ofGDP (inputs and outputs) are among topics alsocovered.FinanceFN 5025. Foundations of Finance (3)Students enrolled in the Health Care Leadershipprogram or focus only. An introduction to financialconcepts at work in various healthcare organizationsand the basic tools available to the financialmanager. Health care-related cases are used to simulatethe environment in which financial decisionsare actually made. Students work individually andin teams. Computer and basic spreadsheet skills areexpected. Prerequisite: AC 5025 or equivalent.FN 6600. Investments (3)Course explores how securities markets work, andhow individual investors employ systematic methodologiesto accomplish investment objectives.Topics include environmental analysis, evaluationof equities, analysis of fixed income securities, fundamentaland technical analysis of the stock marketand capital market theory. Prerequisite: FN 6100or equivalent (ACFN 6001).FN 6650. Essentials of International Finance (2)Course addresses both theory and applicationof international finance. Emphasis is placed onforeign exchange management, including foreignexchange markets and instruments, measuring offoreign exchange exposure, and hedging open foreignexchange positions. The Wall Street Journal isrequired. Prerequisite: ACFN 6310.FN 7100. Financial Management (3)Executive Fellows Program only. Course enablesstudent to complete an accounting and financeproject by assessing his or her own organization.Students also practice accounting and financialdecision-making at a senior-management level,using a financial simulation, and cover the theoriesand tools, and develop the skills necessary tounderstand finance from a senior management/leadership perspective. The project and simulationwill allow the student to practice and learnabout all the finance functions including treasuryand cash management, capital budgets, pro formafinancial statements, capital structure, workingcapital and growth issues.352
