The major portion affords financial assistance to students as directed bythe donors.Cultural Opportunitiesu The Robert R. Lakas, S.J., Memorial Fund was established by friends of the late Rev.Lakas, Rockhurst English professor, whose desire was to share his appreciation of the finearts—literature, music, art, and theater. Support from this fund provides opportunities forstudents and the community to enjoy special programs and performances annually.u The Helen G. Bonfils Endowment for the Fine and Performing Arts was establishedat Rockhurst University in 1976. Inspired by the Victor Hugo apothegm inscribed on thesouth face of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art — “It is by the real that man exists; it isby the ideal that he lives”—Rockhurst University has used the endowment to promotecontact between its students and the fine and performing arts.381
