198EXS 3801. Foundations of Conditioning Lab (1)This laboratory course emphasizes applicationof conditioning principles into fitness and sportsperformance. Prerequisite: EXS 3300, EXS 3301.Corequisite: EXS 3800.EXS 4200. Motor Behavior (3)Motor development will be introduced as will currentconcepts of motor learning and motor control.Concepts and knowledge will be applied and generalizedto exercise and sport settings.EXS 4310. Exercise, Health, and ChronicDisease Prevention (3)This course is designed to introduce students tothe pathophysiology of chronic disease and agingas they relate to exercise and activity. Preventionof chronic disease using lifestyle changes as well asrecognition of exercise-related injuries and dysfunctionare central paradigms of this course. Emphasiswill be placed on lifestyle changes, disease preventionand referral for management. First aid techniques,safety and basic CPR certification will becompleted. Prerequisite or concurrent: EXS 3500,EXS 3501.EXS 4500. Principles of Fitness Assessmentand Exercise Prescription (3)The basic principles of kinesiology and exercisephysiology will be applied to assessing physical fitnessand making appropriate recommendations forexercise prescription and programming. Nutritionand weight management, special populations andaging will be discussed. Application of fitness assessmentand exercise prescription will be applied tospecial populations. Fee. Prerequisite: EXS 3300,EXS 3301, EXS 3500, EXS 3501. Corequisite:EXS 4501.EXS 4501. Principles of Fitness Assessmentand Exercise Prescription Lab (1)The basic principles of kinesiology and exercisephysiology will be applied to assessing physicalfitness and making appropriate recommendationsfor exercise prescription and programming. Practicum in Exerciseand Sport Science (1)Exercise and Sport Science majors in the health/wellness tracks participate in an internship at abusiness or health-related agency. Students servea minimum of 100 hours at the agency. Studentscomplete weekly reports and participate in problem-solvingassignments at the agency. Studentsmay shadow their supervisor and/or assist withclient care. Students should contact the departmentchair the semester prior to taking the practicum,which is typically completed during the last semesterof the program. Students must have a cumulativeGPA of 2.0 and a 2.0 GPA in the major beforeproceeding in the practicum. Prerequisite: Seniorstanding; instructor approval. Fee.EXS 4991. Research in Exercise Science I (1)This course allows the upper level student to learnabout and to participate in and hands-on researchproject. The student will learn about researchmethods, design, data collection and analysis inExercise Science. The student will work directlywith a Professor on a research project and willtake responsibility for literature review, datacollection, data reduction and analysis, somestatistical analysis and making some conclusionsfrom the data collected and analyzed. Basic fundamentalsof research in Exercise Science will beindividually provided by the instructor. May betaken concurrently with EXS 4992. Prerequisite:Junior standing, EXS 3300, EXS 3500, instructorapproval.EXS 4992. Research in Exercise Science II (2)This course allows the upper level student to learnabout and to participate in and hands-on researchproject. Marketing and Communicationin Sport (3)The application of marketing strategies to sportbusinesses and events will be examined. Specialtechniques are necessary to promote and pricesport and recreational activities to spectators,sponsors and participants. Various didactic methodswill be utilized to explore methods of securingand maintaining corporate sponsorship, developingmedia relations, press conferences and the useof public relations techniques. Prerequisite:SM 2500.SM 3750. Sociological and Ethical Issuesin Sport (3)This course provides an extensive overview ofsociological and ethical issues and trends in sportand sport management. This course examines therole of ethics and ethical issues in the decisionmakingprocess. Social trends in sport and theirrelationship to ethical principles and sociologywill be examined. Prerequisite: SM 2500; Recommended:SO 1000.
