238NU 4210/4211. Community Health Nursing (3)This course focuses on public health concepts andthe nursing leadership role for the management ofhealth of communities and global society. Factorsthat impact the community as client are analyzed.Frameworks for planning health education programsfocus on health promotion, risk reduction,and disease prevention. To facilitate the managementof health in communities, selected areas ofstudy may include community assessment, epidemiology,environment, vulnerable populations,disaster management and global health. Prerequisite:All NU 3000 courses. Pre- or corequisite:NU 4100/4101; NU 4230/4231; NU 4400/4401.NU 4230/4231. Community Health NursingPractice (2)This clinical practicum provides the opportunityfor students to incorporate leadership skills andcommunity concepts in a variety of communitysettings. The focus is on health promotion, riskNU 3625. Nursing Management of Patientswith Dysrhythmias (2)This course will focus on nursing care of patientsexperiencing dysrhythmias. Interpretation ofdysrhythmias originating in the SA node, AVnode, AV bundle, and ventricle will provide thefoundation for a systematic discussion of relatednursing care. Pharmacological interventions,as well as electrophysiological interventions,for common dysrhythmias will be addressed.Application of the nursing process to the care ofpatients experiencing dysrhythmias secondaryto conduction defects, acute coronary syndrome(ACS), and congestive heart failure (CHF) will beemphasized. Pre- and post-operative care of thepatient undergoing pacemaker placement, includinginterpretation of paced cardiac rhythms, willalso be included. Review and appraisal of currentevidence-based guidelines for nursing managementof cardiac dysrhythmias, such as those developedby the American Heart Association (AHA), will beincorporated throughout the course. Prerequisite:NU 3200/3201; NU 3210/3211; NU 3430/3431;NU 3440/3441.NU 3640. Addictive/Compulsive Behaviorand Nursing (2)This course is designed to explore different theoriesas they apply to various addictive and compulsivebehaviors and disorders. Topics could include,but are not limited to, alcoholism, problemdrinking, eating disorders, obsessive/compulsivereduction and disease prevention programs withselected at-risk populations. Activities may includeassisting community agencies and organizations toplan, implement, and evaluate health promotionprograms. Assigned Pass/No Pass grade. Prerequisite:All NU 3000 courses. Pre- or corequisite:NU 4100/4101; NU 4210/4211; NU 4400/4401.NU 4400/4401. Capstone: Leadership inProfessional Nursing Practice (5)This clinical practicum provides the opportunity tosynthesize knowledge and skills from previous orcurrent nursing courses through a focused clinicalexperience. This course culminates with leadershiprole acquisition relevant to the clinical site. Thecourse provides for autonomous and collaborativefunctioning, which includes synthesis and integrationof knowledge, skills, and attitudes requisiteto professional nursing practice. Assigned Pass/NoPass grade. Prerequisite: All NU 3000 courses.Pre- or corequisite: NU 4100/4101;NU 4210/4211; NU 4230/4231.Nursing ElectivesNursing electives afford the student the opportunity to pursue an area of interest to develop knowledgeand skills beyond the core content of the curriculum. The variety of course offerings or faculty-guidedindependent study in a given term is subject to availability of faculty and institutional resources. Selectedcourses in the College of Arts and Sciences are also identified and may be used to meet the nursing electiverequirement. These courses will be listed following the nursing electives by course title only. Descriptionsof courses may be found in the approrpriate department section of the <strong>catalog</strong>.disorder, gambling, smoking, “addictive” relationships,cults, chemical abuse, compulsive working,shopping, and sexual behavior. Particular attentionis given to the impaired nurse, characteristics ofnurses, and nursing care in general. Family dynamicsand broader issues related to societal impact areaddressed. Students must be prepared to discusstheir informed opinions in their particular area ofinterest. Prerequisite: All 2000-level nursing coursesor instructor approval.NU 3700. Family Nursing (2)This course is designed to provide students with afoundation in concepts, theories, and paradigms offamily health care nursing across the lifespan and toexplore the application of these ideas in a variety ofhealth care settings. The student has opportunitiesto learn and apply special skills relating to nursingprocess in working with families. Alternative familylife styles and cultures are addressed. Substantialstudent participation is required. Prerequisite: All2000-level nursing courses; all 3200-level nursingcourses; NU 3430/3431 and NU 3440/3441 orinstructor approval.NU 3780. Issues in Critical Care (2)This course is designed to explore issues, concepts,tools, and technologies in critical care. Studentswill be expected to utilize the nursing process,concepts in pathophysiology, and current nursingresearch to facilitate case analysis. Prerequisite:All 2000-level nursing courses; NU 3200/3201;NU 3210/3211.
