244FIP students plan their programs of study in consultation with an academic advisor andfulfill requirements for degree-seeking students.The Center for Service LearningRockhurst University inspires in its students a commitment to service to the larger community.The Center for Service Learning fosters this commitment through campus-widecommunity service projects, assistance with individual volunteer opportunities, and servicelearningprojects designed with faculty to complement academic courses.The Center organizes the Finucane Service Project during Orientation Week (forincoming students). The Center sponsors a variety of service projects in which studentsmay participate throughout their academic career. All students are strongly encouraged toparticipate in community service during their time at Rockhurst.Upon completion of volunteer projects and service-learning activities, students submita form with a record of the project to the Center for Service Learning. Students’ servicehours with nonprofit agencies are recorded on a service transcript, which is available to thestudent upon request.The Center for Service Learning is located in Van Ackeren Hall, Rooms 208/210,telephone 816-501-4545 or 816-501-4642.Deans’ Undergraduate Fellowships for Research and Creative ActivityThe Deans’ Undergraduate Fellowships support research and creative activity by full-timeundergraduates in any discipline. Fellowships provide a weekly stipend for a period of fiveto eight weeks during the summer for students working under the supervision of RockhurstUniversity faculty mentors. Each fellowship is awarded on the basis of the quality ofthe proposal, the applicant’s academic record, and the recommendation from the facultymentor. Deans’ Research Fellows present their work at the annual Rockhurst StudentAchievement Festival. They are also expected to pursue opportunities to present their workto the larger scholarly community within their disciplines.The Pre-Engineering ProgramPre-Engineering students have the option of completing an engineering degree at an affiliatedschool of engineering: Iowa State University, Marquette University, Santa Clara University,the University of Detroit-Mercy, the University of Missouri-Columbia, MissouriUniversity of Science and Technology, the University of Notre Dame, or at any of the otheraccredited engineering schools in the region.Pre-LawThe Pre-Law Committee of the American Bar Association and the Law School AdmissionsCouncil both recommend for those considering a career in law, an undergraduate educationalprogram that has a strong liberal arts focus. As such, there is no official “UndergraduateProgram” for pre-law studies that is required to enter law school. Instead, studentsentering law school have a wide diversity of educational backgrounds, including English,history, philosophy, art, computer science, education, political science, and so on. Ratherthan be concerned over the specific content of the undergraduate experience, law schoolsare primarily interested in students who have developed the skills necessary to succeed inthe field of law, such as logical reasoning, problem solving ability, critical reading skills,and excellence in oral and written communication. Rockhurst University’s Core Curriculum,along with the wide variety of liberal arts majors that are offered, provides studentsinterested in a career of law with an excellent preparation for law school.
