History and Structure of the EnglishLanguage (5)A study of the historical origins of the Englishlanguage, including its relationship to the Indo-European family, its Germanic development intoOld English, Middle English, and Modern Englishwith other Latinate influences on the language, theEnglish language in America, and the developmentof various dialects of English in use today. In addition,the course examines contemporary Englishgrammars, including structural and transformational-generativeapproaches. (Course fulfills statecertification requirements.)SP 6070 (SP 4060). Spanish for the Health CareProfessional (3)The purpose of this course is to provide studentswith the ability to overcome cross-cultural barriersin a medical setting and to communicate effectivelywith speakers of Spanish. Background informationon Hispanic cultures (e.g. customs, conceptions ofthe role of health care providers and courtesy) aswell as some medical terminology will be provided.Issues raised by the differences in conceptions ofthe role of doctors, medicine and health care willbe addressed.
