CD 6128. Language Disorders in School AgeChildren (3)This course will review contemporary literature relatingto the language disorders of school age childrenand adolescents. The students will gain knowledge ofdisorder descriptions, assessment techniques, interventionstrategies, and the interconnections betweenlanguage and learning. Discussion of literacy, themultidimensional nature of language and the use ofculturally different language patterns in the classroomwill also be discussed.CD 6430. Concepts and Practices of Research (3)This course will provide students the knowledge andskills to use principles of evidence-based practice tocritically evaluate and use research to improve clinicalpractice. In this course, the student will narrowa topic of clinical interest, develop and refine a proposedresearch question, and complete a literaturereview and methodology based on the proposedquestion.CD 6559 (CD 4559). American SignLanguage I (3)This course will provide an introduction to sign languageincluding finger-spelling and basic vocabularywords. The development of American Sign Language(A.S.L.) and its application within the Deaf Communitywill also be explored. Students taking thisclass for graduate credit must complete an additionalproject on an accelerated level appropriate for suchgraduate credit.CD 6661 (CD 4661). American SignLanguage II (3)This course will offer ccontinued development inAmerican Sign Language with emphasis on buildingvocabulary and developing conversational skills.Students taking this course for graduate credit mustcomplete an additional project on an accelerated levelappropriate for such graduate credit. Prerequisite:CD 6559 (CD 4559).CD 6830. Aural Rehabilitation (2)This course will discuss the effects of hearing loss onspeech and language skills. Topics will include methodsfor providing speech and language service forpediatric and adult clients, and educational optionsfor children who are deaf. In addition, students willlearn auditory training techniques to enhance the client’suse of their residual hearing.CD 6970. Clinical Practice/Methods I (2)This is the first in the sequence of clinical courses.This course will be a combination of supervisedclinical practice within community-based educationalsettings and classroom instruction. Procedures forscreening, prevention, evaluation, intervention, willbe emphasized in the context of ethical practice andcultural and linguistic diversity. The supervisoryprocess in speech-language pathology will be introducedin this course to promote clinical growth.Emphasis will also be placed on the developmentof professional identity by acquiring knowledge ofprofessional conduct, professional and standards,workplace communication skills, and contemporaryprofessional issues. Principles and procedures used inevidence-based practice will be introduced. Fee.CD 6973. Clinical Practice/AdvancedMethods (2)This course is the second in the sequence of clinicalcourses. It is a combination of classroom instructionand supervised clinical practice in the assessmentand treatment of culturally and linguistically diverseclients. Focus will be on the process through whichnew communication behaviors are introduced, sustainedand generalized to other contexts. Principlesand procedures used in evidence-based practice willbe reviewed and implemented. Current theoriesof interviewing and counseling will be introducedand applied through role-playing and discussions ofclinical scenarios. Fee. Prerequisite: CD 6970.CD 7112. Augmentative and AlternativeCommunication (2)This course will address theoretical and practicalissues pertaining to the identification, evaluation,and treatment of individuals with severe andmultiple communication deficits, which requireaugmentative/alternative communication systemsand/or adapted computer systems. It will includediscussion of the application of graphics, signs andgestural means of communication, use of aids anddevices, development of interactive communicationbehaviors as well as the use of computer assistedcommunication strategies.CD 7130. Genetic Bases of CommunicationDisorders (2)This course will introduce human genetics andexplore the impact of chromosomal and structuralanomalies on the process of communication. Coursecontent will include the assessment and remediationof various disorders related to these anomalies.CD 7135. Counseling in CSD (2)This course will explore contemporary theories ofcounseling, skills and techniques of counseling, andapplication of theories and techniques in clinicalsituations.CD 7225. Listening, Language, Literacy (2)This course will examine the relationships betweenlanguage disorders in children, and learning disabilitiesin the literary (reading and writing) form.Class focus will also be on disorders of the listeningprocesses, and how deficits in these areas can affect astudent’s ability to perform in the areas of languageand literacy acquisition. Overall, class members willbe evaluating and clarifying the use of language asa platform to enhance the understanding of othersubject areas, such as literacy and language.304
