Colloquium on the Great Historians (2)An introduction to the theory and practice of thehistorian’s craft, this course reviews acknowledgedmasterpieces of historiography and examinesimportant issues raised in the writing of history.Readings in the great historians are supplementedby consideration of such topics as the nature ofhistory and the problems of historical causation,objectivity and use encountered by historians.Required for history majors. Prerequisite: Juniorstanding or above. Concurrent: HS 4900.HS 4100. History as Biography (3)This course examines the lives and historicalimpact of selected individuals who have significantlyinfluenced the history of western and/orworld civilization, or who have embodied muchthat is representative of the periods in whichthey lived. The course also discusses the value ofbiography as a literary genre and a contribution tohistorical scholarship. Students read a number ofhistorical biographies and are introduced to varietiesof historical interpretation. (HSII)Integrated Humanities (HU)ProfessorHU 2110 and HU 2120. IntegratedHumanities I, II (4)Fall (HU 2110); Spring semester (HU 2120)A level one interdisciplinary sequence focusing onsignificant epochs from Classical Greece to theearly 21st century as expressed in the primary textsand works of the culture: artistic, historical, literary,and philosophical. An additional componentprovides the opportunity for students to attend cocurricularevents and productions that are relevantto the course. Prerequisite: 1) Freshman standingwith one of the following: a) a score of 24 or aboveon the ACT English test; b) completed writingproficiency or equivalent, or c) honors standing. 2)Sophomore standing or above. (Enrollment in bothHS 4900. Senior Seminar in History (1)A one credit-hour seminar on research methods inhistory including regular presentations and discussionof issues and problems in historical researchand the completion of a major research paperconducted under the supervision of a history departmentfaculty member and presented orally near theend of the semester. Required for history majors.Prerequisite: Junior standing or above. Concurrent:HS 4000.HS 4970. Internship (2-3)The internship provides opportunities for studentsto apply their knowledge of history and historicalmethods by working in areas and institutions relatedto historical study. Internships may be pursuedin education, government, museums, archives,not-for-profit organizations and other areas. Theinternship experience may be conducted in KansasCity, surrounding communities or other approvedlocations. The work will be supervised or monitoredby a departmental faculty advisor and will requireon-site work as well as a log of hours worked andtypes of work performed and a journal and/or paperreflecting on the experience. The internship may becounted as upper-division credit toward the historymajor or minor; the internship may be repeatedonce but only for elective credit.
