Course DescriptionsOT 5110. Medical Conditions I (1)This is the first in a two-course sequence that introducesthe student to general concepts of humanpathology and models of disease with primaryemphasis placed on ICF classifications, medicalterminology, universal precautions, psychological,visual, diabetic, and cancerous diseases. Coursecontent includes the etiology, signs, and symptoms,clinical course, prognosis, medical testing, and medical/surgicalmanagement of selected conditions.OT 5160. Health Through Occupation I (2)The historical foundations of occupational therapyas they relate to the theories that underlie practiceare examined. The basic constructs of relevant occupationsand purposeful activity are analyzed withina person/environment/performance framework. Theroles and responsibilities of occupational therapistsand other health care team members are discussedalong with an introduction to documentation.Future directions of the profession are explored inconjunction with various models of health care asthey relate to the practice of OT.OT 5170. Research I: Evidence Based Practice (2)This course is the first in a four-course sequencedesigned to introduce the student to clinicalresearch, the systematic investigations performed onhuman subjects that are related to the principles andpractices of a clinical profession. The focus of thiscourse is on evidence-based practice (EBP). Studentswill become proficient in the use of technology toinvestigate clinical questions.OT 5180. Occupational Performance: Education,Health and Wellness (2)Specific instruction in teaching methodologies andtechniques are provided through practical experiencesin specifying objectives, planning lessons,preparing instructional materials and experience withthe praxis of teaching. Concepts of health promotionand wellness, prevention, and community health willprovide a context for the application of educationaltheory and techniques useful in the classroom, clinicor community.OT 5270. Occupational Performance:Screening and Evaluation (1)Screening and evaluation skills of the contemporaryoccupational therapist are the focus of this course.Techniques utilized to screen and assess the clientare introduced. Students will be introduced tostandardized and nonstandardized screening andevaluation tools, the interpretation and analysis ofresults, body mechanics, work simplification, energyconservation, adaptive techniques, and home modificationconcepts as they relate to the occupationalperformance of an individual. Lab fee.OT 5300. Research II: Design and Analysis (2.5)This course is designed to introduce the student toclinical research including descriptive, parametric,and non-parametric statistical tests, and researchhypothesis. Students will examine critical features ofa research journal article, integrate research findings,and evaluate research design as it applies to clinicalpractice. Corequisite: OT 5350.OT 5350. Research II: Design and AnalysisLab (.5)Lab activities provide the students with the opportunityto apply concepts from OT 5300 lecture toclinical issues. Assignments will facilitate beginningproficiency in data collection and statistical analysis.Students learn to evaluate elements of researchdesign, to perform and interpret descriptive, parametric,and non-parametric statistical tests. Corequisite:OT 5350.OT 5400 (BL 5400, PT 6100). Anatomy (4)This course presents an integrated regional approachto the study of the structure and function of thehuman body with emphasis on the musculoskeletaland peripheral nervous system. The study of thefundamental tissues, organs, and other systems ofthe body cavities are also included. Prerequisite:Acceptance into the occupational therapy educationprogram. Corequisite: OT 5401.OT 5401 (BL 5401, PT 6102). Anatomy Lab (1)This laboratory course is taught concurrently withthe Anatomy lecture to provide application of thestructure and function of the human body throughhands-on lab activities utilizing diagrams, models,specimens. Lab fee. Corequisite: OT 5400.OT 5430. Psychological and Social Performancein Daily Life Occupations: Theory/Practice (4)Theoretical frames of reference and practice modelsfor prevention, intervention and management ofpsychological and social disorders are presented. Thestudent will gain an understanding of individualand group psychological and social assessmentsand interventions pertinent to frames of referenceused in occupational therapy practice settings. Thiscourse provides a foundation for observing andunderstanding client behavior as it occurs acrossdisability type and, from a variety of models andframes of reference. Corequisite: OT 5440.OT 5440. Occupational Intervention I: Psychologicaland Social Performance (2)The laboratory course, offered in conjunction withOT 5430, introduces therapeutic approaches topsychosocial performance, including purposefulactivity, human performance, and adaptation.
