CD 3250. Anatomy and Physiology of theSpeech and Hearing Mechanisms (3)This course will provide an overview of the anatomicalstructures that support the communicationand swallowing processes. The physiology andinterconnections of the respiration, phonation,articulation, resonation, neurology, hearing, andmastication/deglutition systems will be examined.Prerequisite: CD 2525 or department approval.CD 3260. Transcription Phonetics (3)This course will provide an introduction to phonetictranscription using the International PhoneticAlphabet. Students will engage in transcription ofnormal and disordered speech including the useof broad and narrow diacritic symbols. Studentswill learn about transcription of Standard English,dialects, and speech of individuals who use Englishas a second language. Prerequisite: CD 2525 ordepartment approval.CD 3350. Neural Bases of Communication (3)This course will examine the structural, functional,and organizational frameworks of the central andperipheral nervous systems as they relate to normaland disordered speech and language processing,swallowing and cognition. Prerequisite: CD 3250.CD 3650. Introduction to Audiology (3)This course will provide an overview of the conceptsand principles relevant to normal hearingprocesses. Topics will include the scientific basesof communication such as acoustics, gross anatomy,physiology; theories of hearing; principles ofhearing measurement; and testing and screening,as well as the interpretation of results. Prerequisite:CD 3250.CD 4450. Clinical Management: Pediatrics (3)This course will examine the etiologies, characteristics,assessment, and intervention principlesfor pediatric clients with speech, language, and/or swallowing disorders. Evidence-based practiceacross assessment and intervention strategies forthis population will be emphasized. Prerequisite:CD 2605 and CD 3260. Corequisite: CD 4550,CD 4526.CD 4526. Clinical Observation (1)This course provides clinical observation experiencesthat complement the topics covered in CD4450 and CD 4550. Students will have the opportunityto observe individuals experiencing communicationchallenges in a variety of clinical settingsand reflect on their observations. Corequisite: CD4450 and CD 4550.CD 4550. Clinical Management: Adults (3)This course will examine the etiologies, characteristics,assessment, and intervention principlesfor adult clients with known or suspected speech,language, and/or swallowing disorders. Evidencebasedpractice across assessment and interventionstrategies for this population will be emphasized.Prerequisite: CD 3350. Corequisite: CD 4450 andCD 4526.CD 4559 (CD 6559). American SignLanguage I (3)This course will provide an introduction to signlanguage including finger-spelling and basic vocabularywords. The development of American SignLanguage (A.S.L.) and its application within theDeaf Community will also be explored. Studentstaking this class for graduate credit must completean additional project on an accelerated levelappropriate for such graduate credit. Prerequisite:Sophomore standing.CD 4655. Speech and Hearing Science (3)This course will provide an overview of physicsand psychoacoustics of speech and hearing. Communicationprocesses will be considered in relationto both speech production and speech signalperception and processing. Theory, measurementand instrumentation in studying normal aspects ofspeech production and perception will be included.Prerequisite or concurrent: CD 3250.CD 4661 (CD 6661). American SignLanguage II (2)This course will offer continued development inAmerican Sign Language with emphasis on buildingvocabulary and developing conversationalskills. Students taking this course for graduatecredit must complete an additional project on anaccelerated level appropriate for such graduatecredit. Prerequisite: CD 4559.CD 4960. Seminar in CSD (3)This course will emphasize the use of evidencebasedresearch in the field of speech-languagepathology. Students will complete a researchproject related to a clinically relevant topic oftheir choice. Students will compose an annotatedbibliography, a research brief, and will prepare anddeliver a research presentation for the Universitycommunity. Additional course activities or topicswill include a service-learning project, leadershipand advocacy, the role of clinical education in preprofessionaldevelopment, or the development ofclinical expertise.
