ThePolier, like the Mannschaftsfuhrer, is concernedprimarily with the German personnel in his charge, (asfar as personnel administration is concerned).The Hilfspoliere, as already stated, are foreigners andconcern themselves with worker detachments made up oftheir own countrymen. Specifically the duties of thePoliere (and Schachtmeister) are (1) on the constructionjob: to march their men to cover in case of enemy attack,to set out gasmasks and steel helmets in proper orderready for use, to demonstrate the proper use of theequipment and of fire-arms, to distribute noonday rationsand to render advice on personal problems; (2) in camp:to assist the Lagerfdhrer (see vii) in the capacity of acompany sergeant, to make inspections of clothing andequipment. Hisother two assignments are discussed in para.119 below.)The Hilfslagerftthrer-Hilfspolier-Bereitschaftsfuhrer is acollaborationist of the type on whoa the Germans put agreat deal of dependence. He was to have been "the typeout of whom the modern European labour leader" was t o bedeveloped. (OT Directive, 15 May 1944). He is, naturallyenough, of the same nationality as the men who composethe Bereitschaft (Worker detachment) in his charge. Heis an N00, wears an OT uniform, has undergone Frontfuhrungschooling and is part of oT-organic personnel. He is paidby the OT and attached to a firm, where he is active inthe interests of the Mannschaftsfahrer. Hilfspolier isthe occupational grade (although he is not a member of theGerman trade guild) according to which he is paid andwhich is given him solely in order to subordinate him tothe Polier inasmuch as his main function is to assist thelatter on the construction job (see para, 119 below). Thedesignation Bereitschaftsfdhrer indicates his assignmentas leader of a march formation of 100 to 150 foreignworkers. The designation Hilf slagerftthrer indicates hisassignment in camp as a subordinate of the Lagerfuhrer.The Hilfspolier 1 s administrative duties towards his menare similar to those of the Polier and Mannschaftsfuhrertowards the German personnel. These are specifically: tocall reveille in the morning, take roll call, keep order,investigate unauthorised absence, enforce hygienicregulations, keep personnel strength and casualty reports,look after the social routine, distribute mail, distributerations and keep order during mess, investigate irregularitiesin the pay of his men, advise his men on personalproblems, family matters, insurance, allotments and onfurlou^i regulations, check personal equipment, conveyhis men to cover during air raids, render first aid,report recalcitrant workers in his charge (who were thenput in specially guarded formations: Bewachte Bereitschaft).Furthermore he has to keep his men properly indoctrinated,and above all, keep the number of absentees from workfor any case whatsoever, to an absolute minijaun.In short, all his functions point to one objective, thatof getting the most out of the men, as far as work is-126­
