The transport organizations forking'for the OT received their ownHQ directives concerning general matters of transport, but in allmatters of operational activities they were under the directcontrol of the OT units, especially the OBL f s, to which they wereassigned. There follows here a complete lis t of Abschnittsftthrungenas they existed in 1943*1. Abschnittsffthrung West (Prance, Belgium, Ifelland)2. Abschnittsfuhrung Wiking (Norway. Denmark)3. Absennittsftthrung Russland-Word4. Ab sennit tsftthrung Russland-Mitte5. Abschnittsfuhrung SQdost (Balkans)6. Abschnittsffthrung ItalienJ. AbschnittsfOhrung ReichThe Absohnittsfohrung West, with HQ at Paris, was attached toEinsatz®?uppe West and controlled transportation for the OT unitsin France, Belgium and Holland. The staff was organized alongmilitary lines and the numbering system of individual sectionscorresponds almost exactly with that of the BERLIN staff of theHQof NSKK-Gruppe Todt (or Transportkorps SHEER). The sections are,in part, as followsAbt. la Einsatz (Movement of vehicles from one unitto another)Abt. Ib ?Abt. II Personal (Personnel)Abt. Ill Gericht (Court and Discipline)Abt. IVa Truppenvenvaltung (Administration)Abt. IVb Arzt (Medical Service)Abt. Vk Technik (Technique)Abschnittsffthrung West distributed units called Kraf twagenstaffelor simply Staffel (Battalion strength) to various OBL's according toneed. Usually one Staff el was assigned to one OBL, but sometimes oneStaff el took care of the transport needs of more than one OBL. Unitscalled Hauptkolonnen> Kraftwagenhauptkolonnen or Transporthauptkolonnenand smaller units called Rolonnen or Transportkolonnen served variousconstruction undertakings within an OBL. With the introduction ofLegion SFEER, formations called Abteilungen, Kompanien and Zftge wereassigned to various OT units on a level with Staffeln, Hauptkolonnenand Kolonnen. The direct contact between the OT and NSKK wasestablished through NSKK-Verbindungsftthrer (NSKK Liaison officers) whowere attached to the various OBL's.The size of the various transport units varied greatly accordingto need. The number of Staffeln and Abteilungen in an Abschnittdepended naturally on the number and strength of 03L f s in anEinsatzgruppe. A Staff el attached to the 03L CHERBOURG and OBL Normandiewas subdivided into 18 Hauptkolonnen which altogether contained549 transport lorries, 87 buses and 13 motorcycles. Some Hauptkolonnentook exclusive care of the transport of material, while othersspecialised in personnel. Staffeln in other OBL g s were considerablysmaller, as they normally consisted of about 6 Hauptkolonnen.A Hauptkolonne was usually subdivided into 3 Kolonnen, each controllingabout 10-45 lorries.A schematic picture of the transport formations working for theOT in France and the Low Countries presents great difficulties becauseof the frequent changes which took place from time to time in theorganization of the units.- 3i
