greeting
east silver
We are presenting
the East Silver selection of
documentary films
from Central and Eastern Europe
in the DOK Market.
It is a great honour for us to continue our cooperation
with DOK Leipzig by presenting the East Silver selection
of documentary films from Central and Eastern Europe
in the DOK Market.
In 2012 East Silver is bringing three remarkable films to the
festival program. Private Universe by Helena Třeštíková and
Rudolf Šmíd’s docu-animation Chronicle of Oldřich S. are
both Czech representatives.
They are based on the
narrative technique caught
in private family chronicles,
showing not only the life
of ordinary families but also
how the Czech society
has changed in the last four
decades.
The third selected doc Mama Illegal is directed by Austrian
filmmaker Ed Moschitz. It shows sad stories of three
women from a small town in Moldavia, living now in Austria
as cleaning women. On top of their hard job they live
a life in illegality without documents, far away from their
children and families for years.
Another ten documentaries can be found at the DOK
Market. They are all part of the East Silver Market, which
serves as a meeting point for the key industry professionals
interested in exceptional, hand-picked creative East
European documentaries. The best East European films
of the East Silver Market are nominated in three
categories (short, mid-length, and feature) for the Silver
Eye Award which brings financial prizes and festival
services all year round.
The East Silver Caravan documentary showcase travels
with a selection of the best creative documentaries from
Central and Eastern Europe, in order to reach a wide
international audience. We cooperate with 90 of the most
prestigious film festivals and markets around the world.
East Silver is organized by The Institute of Documentary
Film. The main partner of the project is Jihlava International
Documentary Film Festival.
We wish you an inspiring festival and a successful market
in Leipzig! Sincerely,
Miriam ryndová (ex Šimková)
As it is every year, it is a great pleasure for me to present the
newest Polish documentaries and animated films to
DOK Leipzig guests as well as to the wonderful audiences
again. The presence of Polish films at this year’s festival is
a development of the continuous and growing cooperation
between DOK Leipzig and the Krakow Film Foundation.
Every year, thanks to the organizers, we have a unique
opportunity to present within the framework of the DOK
Market, a carefully chosen set of the newest Polish
documentary films. We are also more than happy that a
great number of Polish films were chosen to be screened in
this year’s Festival Programme. We strongly recommend
the winner of this year’s Krakow Film Festival – Entangled,
awarded with the Golden Hobby Horse for the director
Lidia Duda as well as with the Best Cinematography Award
for DoP Wojciech Staroń,
already known to the DOK
Leipzig audience for his
own documentary Argentinian
Lesson, awarded with
the Silver Dove last year.
The film will be presented
in the International
Competition. I can also highly recommend the debut film
from Wajda School graduate – Radka Franczak – Losing
Sonia, screened here in the International Young Talent
Competition – Generation DOK.
Worth mentioning are also the four animated short films
made by young filmmakers screened within the framework
of the Anima Competition: What Happens When Children
Don’t Eat Soup by Paweł Prewencki (Animadoc), Paper Box,
by Zbigniew Czapla and Emperor’s Toys by Tomasz Godfryd,
Jarosław Moździerz, Joanna Rusinek, Joanna Wójcik,
Grzegorz Wierzchowski and New German Animation:
Afternoon by Polish filmmaker Izabela Plucińska.
As in other years, the participants of this year’s Krakow
Film Market can watch films recommended by the
organizers of DOK Leipzig, just as the viewers attending
the DOK Market are more than welcome to see some
of the projects promoted under Polish Docs in the digital
video-library. I sincerely believe that our proposal is
interesting to all film professionals (and not only) those
visiting DOK Leipzig this year.
I wish organizers, guests and viewers an exciting and
fruitful Festival and Market,
We are more than happy
that a great number of Polish films
were chosen to be screened
in this year’s Festival Programme.
