little afgHanistan
by Basir seerat
Vintage horse-drawn carriages used as taxis mingle with
heavy automobile traffic down a very long street. The
coachmen attempt to resist the pressing urban planning
desires of the riverbank inhabitants, a modernization
which would make them disappear.
Dok Market
little perestroJka
by Bernhard pötscher
Shailo Djekshenbaev is a photographer living in
Bishkek. For years, he has documented in his work the
changes in his country, Kyrgystan. The little known
republic in Central Asia, its tradition interwoven with
the legacy of Genghis Khan and the mystique of the
Silk Road, was under Soviet rule until 1991. Following a
revolution in April 2010, Kyrgystan became the first
country in Central Asia to introduce a parliamentary
democracy. But the road to democracy has proved long
and treacherous. Ethnic conflicts between Usbeks
and Kyrgyz led to terrible riots in June 2010. We join
Shailo on a journey to the turbulent South.
