petra’s poeM
by shira avni
In this visually compelling, colourful short, Toronto
artist Petra Tolley performs a candid soliloquy
about what it feels like to be ‘in the middle.’ Petra has
Down syndrome, and draws from her emotional
experiences of living and working in the flux between
societal order and personal chaos to produce a dis-
tinctive take on the social self. Award-winning director
Shira Avni (Tying Your Own Shoes, John and Michael)
employs rotoscopy and hand-drawn animation
techniques to enhance and interact with Petra’s performance.
But Petra is not alone – a troupe of adults
with Down syndrome rallies around Petra in a theatrical
movement that explores the dynamics of seclusion,
societal expectations and social support. In subtle
stereoscopic 3D, Petra engages the camera with unflinching
and tender directness, heightening our sense
of intimacy, alienation, bonding and innately, dignity.
by laura Yilmaz
Places Other People Have Lived is a mixed media exploration
of the relationship between memory and place, as
examined through the sale of a childhood home. Using
old photographs, recorded interviews with family
members, and multiple animation techniques, the film
deconstructs room-by-room a house that was a family
home for more than 25 years. What begins as a biography
of a house, told through bittersweet and sometimes
humorous personal anecdotes, ultimately raises larger
questions about the emotional content of physical
spaces, and what happens to our histories when we leave
those places behind.
