Over the past decade, female genital cosmetic surgery
has increased by a staggering 500%. Centrefold is a
unique animated documentary that takes an innovative
and balanced approach to this controversial topic.
Created by award winning filmmaker Ellie Land and
funded by the Wellcome Trust, the film follows three
women, aged 24–41 through their different experiences
of labiaplasty (surgery to trim or remove the labia).
‘My labia was long, dark, stretchy, shriveled up and I was
quite embarrassed about it. I’ve never thought that
my genital area and labia was normal’ (Anonymous – explaining
her reasons for having a labiaplasty). By documenting
what is involved in the procedure and its
varying outcomes, the film seeks to offer a non-judgemental
view of labia surgery and to encourage informed
discussion: Is labiaplasty anti-female ‘pornification’,
or an empowering personal choice ? Centrefold provides
the facts. You decide.
Shipping containers line the side of the road. This
is one of the main entry points into Kabul. At this police
station, fifteen officers work, eat and sleep, machine
gun in hand. They come from nearby villages but their
lives are spent here, at this intersection. Day and
night, they keep watch, search vehicles, check drivers’
and passengers’ ID. Their job is neither free of risk
nor inconvenience: terrorist attacks, angry motorists or
criticism against the Afghan police force. They are
accused of corruption, abuse of power, trafficking weap-
ons and uniforms and raping women.
