It’s not easy to forecast what’s going to happen in Syria.
The hope of many is that the Assad family will democratically
step down, after 40 years of dictatorship
but many people fear that they will drag the population
to hell before disappearing from the scene. Most
of the Syrian population wishes that the revolution will
remain in the hands of young people and continue
peacefully as a symbol of Hope, although some can’t help
firing back when the regime brings blood to the popu-
lation. Some hope for an intervention from a foreign
country, but are also afraid that this would bring a civil
war. Isqat al Nizam is a crude and touching story that
sheds some light on the ‘Syrian Spring’: from the initial
violent reactions of the regime, to the heartbreaking
escape of more than 20,000 refugees to Turkey; from the
constant activity of the rebels through social net-
works to the ongoing defection of soldiers and former
officials. The collection of exclusive interviews with
locals and stolen footage of the events make this film a
unique account.
Tuscan fields, bel canto arias, slow food and movie
stars are some of the images synonymous with one of
the world’s most adored cultures. Yet many of film-
makers Luca Ragazzi and Gustav Hofer’s disenchanted
friends have recently emigrated from Italy. Before
following suit, the Italian couple decides to take a six-
month road trip across the country to investigate
the extent to which current realities outweigh the icons
of la dolce vita. Throughout their exploration they
witness multiple examples of staggering corruption, an
increasingly lower standard of living, environmental
hazards and intransigent fanaticism. Simultaneously,
however, they encounter loyal crusaders who feel
unequivocally compelled to make their homeland a better
place. In an astute manner and with quirky Fellini-esque
animation, the film further tantalizes us with Italy’s
glorious past and future potential. Will the pair decide
to leave or stay ? Their journey tells it all.
