Dok international programme
My rebelliousness grows trough my family history, it is
not trivial to be a daughter of Communists, I feel a
deep need and desire for freedom. I always thought that
my films only spoke of it: ‘The Freedom’. During the
filming of Laicité Inch’Allah ! I have no choice. I confront
the Islamists: war is declared ! In parallel, I discovered
the corridors of the Tenon Hospital in November, in
Paris. I must therefore face a second enemy: my Cancer.
Why should I have made a film ? I wanted to explain
the ‘repercussions of my previous movie’ ? It allows me to
continue the fight and saying, once again, that ‘those
who live are those who fight’. (Victor Hugo)
nurse gretel #2
– escape
by Barbara Hlali
Being on the run involuntarily. Standing next to
the street at dusk, not knowing where to go. Waiting
at the station for days for the next train to come.
Being robbed of the little possessions that were left.
Hiding from assaults by enemy soldiers. Being
scared for the life of one’s own child. But also: getting
help from strangers again and again. Having a roof
over one’s head thanks to lucky circumstances. Discovering
humanity in strangers. Unexpectedly experiencing
moments of peace and quiet. As an elderly woman,
nurse Gretel tells her story of her escape from Silesia to
West Germany at the end of World War II. The per-
sonal fate of one woman that today still is suffered by
thousands in the same manner every day.
