His opera Village
in Burkina faso
by sibylle Dahrendorf
An African Bayreuth ? An Opera in Africa ? Christoph
Schlingensief, the German film, theatre and opera
director had a vision for an opera village in Africa.
Despite cancer, he made regular trips to Burkina Faso,
such was his devotion and conviction. Crackle of Time
tells the story of an impossible project: To build an opera
village in Burkina Faso, a space combining art and life,
with a school, theatre, hospital and living quarters. From
the initial location search in May 2009, to the official
opening of the school in October 2011, the documentary
takes us up close to the man and his architect Francis
Kéré. We get behind their vision and witness the
struggles and hurdles to get the ‘opera village’ off the
ground. Christoph Schlingensief died in August 2010.
But his dream lives on. Last year Christoph Schlingensief
was posthumously awarded the Golden Lion at
the Venice Biennale for his stage installation, ‘fluxus
oratorium – church of fear’ in the German pavilion.
criMson Mask
by Marco eisenbarth
Crimson Mask is a feature length documentary that
follows German ‘Ultra Violence Wrestler’ Thumbtack
Jack a.k.a. Alexander Bedranowsky in and outside
of the wrestling ring. It is more than just a review of this
unique athlete’s career but an honest and surprising
portrait of this seemingly insane and brutal character
that is Thumbtack Jack, who mutilates himself and his
opponents with barbed wire, thumbtacks, glass, syringes
and even fire. Crimson Mask shows the man on the
other side. From his career high touring the United States
of America, over the feud with his arch enemy, Drake
Younger to his very last ‘Death Match’ against his long
time friend and mentor ‘Hate’, the filmmaker Marco
Eisenbarth never leaves Thumbtack Jack’s side.
But then an incident occurs that will change Alexander
Bedranowsky’s life forever …
