Soviet film avant-garde flourished in the West while the
Russians rushed to watch German films. East and West
joined forces in the unique German-Russian film
studio Meshrabpom-Film, under the roof of the workers’
relief organisation IAH (Internationale Arbeiterhilfe).
The vision of its founders, the red media tsar Willi
Muenzenberg and Moisei Aleinikov, the last independent
Russian entrepreneur: To establish a new way of film-
making. Entertainment, political enlightenment and
social consciousness, presented with a new film language
and with international distribution. Among the masters
of the studios were Yakov Protasanov, Vsevolod
Pudovkin, Boris Barnet, Dziga Vertow and Joris Ivens. The
ZDF/ARTE & MDR documentary includes statements
by film historians and critics Naum Kleiman, Yekaterina
Khokhlova and Andrei Plakhov, as well as prominent
filmmakers and contemporary film entrepreneurs from
Russia like Aleksei Popogrebsky, Andrei Sviagintsev,
Igor Tolstunov and Ilya Bachurin. The film connects
fascinating film history of the 1920s and 30s and contem-
porary Russian film. Many film excerpts and photos
are shown for the first time. Just like many of the historical
films portrayed, this documentary is a joint German-
Russian effort: cinematography by Andrei Pitinov, origi-
nal musical composition by Bernd Schultheis, graphics/
CGI by Fabian Harmanus.
