tHe captain
anD His pirate
by andy Wolff
Imagine you are the captain of a container ship: You
get hijacked by Somali pirates. After three weeks,
suddenly, the pirates gather the hostages and say: ‘There
is no ransom offer from your shipping company. We
will execute you.’ The pirates drag you onto the deck;
push you on your knees. One of them aims his gun
at your head and shoots. The bullet hits the wall behind
you. Drenched in cold sweat you fall unconscious and
lie on the ship’s deck. Only a few weeks after his liberation
this very captain tells me: ‘The pirates’ boss was human.
There were times on board when he was the only
one to back me up. There were even moments when I
felt safe with him.’ The seizure of the Hansa Stavanger
is one of the most notorious cases in modern piracy
and the longest hostage taking at sea known in German
history. My documentary is about the complex relationship
arising between culprit and victim under a death
threatening hostage situation. The film tells the intimate
story of the friendship between Captain Kotiuk and
the pirates Ahado in a drama lasting over four months.
captain
tHoMas sankara
by christophe cupelin
On 4 August 1983, Thomas Sankara becomes the
president of Upper Volta after a coup d’état. A year later,
he definitively creates a turning point in the history
and identity of his country, renaming it Burkina Faso,
literally ‘Land of Upright Men’. He brings enormous
hope to a great portion of African youth far beyond the
boundaries of his country. By conducting a ‘democratic
and popular’ revolution, he brings more progress to
the people during the four years of his presidency than
during half a century of French colonial rule. Blending
together rare and meticulously assembled archives,
director Christophe Cupelin offers a panoramic vision
of the intellectual and political inheritance of this
atypical head of state. Giving his documentary the en-
ergy of a punk manifesto, between idealism and irony, he
faithfully restitutes the originality of a president as
striking in his action as in his words. In 2012, twenty five
years after his tragic and still not officially elucidated
death, the film offers an opportunity to see and listen to
the voice of one of the most important African leaders
of the 20th century.
