tHe art of YoDeling
by eivind tolas
A hipster goes yodel. We follow the philosophy student
and yodeler Polkabjørn on his way to the ultimate
yodel experiences and to success. He and his musical
companion Kleine Heine take their yodel act from
the narrow fjords of Norway to huge stadium concerts,
the world’s leading throat expert, the Faroe Islands,
Texas and Germany. We meet their enthusiastic manager,
a male stripper and one of the biggest yodel fans on
earth. Why are they doing this ? Do they really like it ?
And, will Polkabjørn ever meet the Jodlerkönig, his
big yodel hero ?
If you could pick only one photograph of yourself for
the next generations to remember you, which one would
you choose ? The film brings together stories from
people facing their gravestone picture while still being
alive and focuses on the image of the self as a threshold of
the visible world they leave behind. As this is an eter-
nal memory for the descendants, people seem to be very
keen on finding ‘the right’ portrait. How would you
recognize your 82-year-old grandparents if their grave-
stone portrait shows them as 16-year-old adolescents ?
The graveyard picture is also part of the collective
memory of the society we live in. That’s why Sabina, a
72-year-old widow, wants to replace her gravestone
picture because she is ‘too red’ and she will be misjudged
as an alcoholic. Making a gravestone picture is not an
easy task nowadays, as the photo ceramic companies offer
a variety of shapes and backgrounds, from colourful
curtains to natural landscapes or ‘heaven-like’ sceneries.
While the audience discovers the graveyard as a public
photo album and a living social document, the characters
fall into a psychological process of finding the perfect
image to-be-remembered.
