In Genikan – a remote mountain village on the slope of<br />
Merbabu (Central Java), a quiet community is facing<br />
change without understanding why it is happening. As a<br />
community of farmers who relies on the traditional<br />
Javanese calendar system to read the seasons, they become<br />
puzzled by the dramatic change of seasons. Muryati<br />
(30 years old) and Sudardi (32 years old), a farmer<br />
family, try to understand why it rains more than in the<br />
previous years. Failed harvests and cheap sale prices<br />
become a threat. Meanwhile, Arifin (12 years old)<br />
is facing a different question: what does the future offer<br />
him ? At a very young age, he has to deal with the<br />
complicated public school system. In the rhythm of a slow<br />
visual journey The Land Beneath the Fog takes an intimate<br />
look at family relations in Genikan. Describing a<br />
life on the brink of vanishing, this documentary offers<br />
deep insights into an invisible and disenfranchised<br />
society which is struggling hard to maintain its existence.<br />
