activities <strong>and</strong> crises management.<br />
The main activity of the Working Group in 2009 was<br />
conducting a Joint Symposium with the JBGIS Gi4DM<br />
‐ Cartography <strong>and</strong> Geoin<strong>for</strong>matics <strong>for</strong> Early Warning<br />
<strong>and</strong> Emergency <strong>Management</strong> ‐ held in January 2009<br />
in Prague, Czech Republic. The symposium topics<br />
were organized under the themes of: frameworks<br />
<strong>and</strong> tools; technologies <strong>and</strong> infrastructures; citizens<br />
in early warning <strong>and</strong> emergency management; e‐<br />
government <strong>and</strong> e –governance; <strong>and</strong> cartographic<br />
<strong>and</strong> Geoin<strong>for</strong>matics applications. A ‘Round Table’ on<br />
Spatially Enabled Early Warning <strong>and</strong> Emergency<br />
<strong>Management</strong> was held at the Symposium.<br />
In early April 2009, the Working Group promoted its<br />
activities at a seminar on the Potentials in Early<br />
Warning <strong>and</strong> Emergency <strong>Management</strong> at the<br />
international GeoSiberia conference in Novosibirsk.<br />
Following the success of the sessions it was decided<br />
to include meetings of the WG as part of future<br />
GeoSiberia conferences.<br />
At the International Cartographic Conference, held in<br />
Santiago, Chile in November 2009 the Working<br />
Group met <strong>and</strong> a number of papers related to<br />
cartography <strong>and</strong> Geoin<strong>for</strong>matics <strong>for</strong> Early Warning<br />
were presented. Two sessions in the ICC program<br />
were devoted to problems of Emergency<br />
<strong>Management</strong>. As well, as part of an outreach activity<br />
the Working Group conducted an excursion to the<br />
Chilean Military Center <strong>for</strong> Crises <strong>Management</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
the Chilean Civilian Emergency <strong>Management</strong> Office<br />
both located in Santiago de Chile.<br />
In April 2010 in Novosibirsk, Russia, a seminar was<br />
held on Early Warning <strong>and</strong> Crises/<strong>Disaster</strong><br />
<strong>Management</strong>. This was a joint event between the<br />
ICA, the International Society on Digital Earth‐ISDE<br />

<strong>and</strong> SSGA, with the participation of colleagues from<br />
the <strong>ISPRS</strong> <strong>and</strong> FIG.<br />
A number of events are in preparation <strong>for</strong> 2010.<br />
These are: Nessebar, Bulgaria, June 2010 ‐ Digital<br />
Earth Summit <strong>and</strong> 3rd Conference on Cartography<br />
<strong>and</strong> GIS ‐ a seminar on Early Warning <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>Disaster</strong>/Crises <strong>Management</strong>: European Concepts <strong>for</strong><br />
Crises <strong>Management</strong> <strong>and</strong> Early Warning; <strong>and</strong> Orl<strong>and</strong>o,<br />
USA, November 2010 ‐ a workshop on Crises<br />
<strong>Management</strong> <strong>and</strong> Early Warning at AutoCarto 2010.<br />
The 25th International Cartography Conference <strong>and</strong><br />
the 15th General Assembly of the International<br />
Cartographic Association will take place between 3–<br />
8 July 2011, in Paris, France. The Working Group on<br />
Early Warning <strong>and</strong> Crisis <strong>Management</strong> will hold a<br />
focused meeting in Paris in conjunction with the<br />

Summary<br />
In summary, the International Cartographic<br />
Association began to be active in Early Warning <strong>and</strong><br />
Crises <strong>Management</strong> in 2003. This followed with a<br />
number of activities that have now become part of<br />
the Working Group’s activities ‐ seminars at<br />
Borovets <strong>and</strong> Nessebar in Bulgaria, seminars in<br />
Novosibirsk, Russia, at AutoCarto USA <strong>and</strong> at<br />
International Cartographic Conferneces. The<br />
working Group continues to address the issues of<br />
Crises <strong>Management</strong> <strong>and</strong> Early Warning in<br />
collaboration with members of the JBGIS.<br />
