nodes. For remote maintenance <strong>and</strong> supervising a<br />

DSL internet connection via satellite is set up at the<br />

base station using additionally a relay station at the<br />

so-called main sensor node. The central station is a<br />

personal computer <strong>and</strong> hence connected to the local<br />

power network (220 V). At the Aggenalm L<strong>and</strong>slide,<br />

although not m<strong>and</strong>atory, the main sensor node with<br />

a high diversity of different sensors <strong>and</strong><br />

functionalities is also cable-connected to the local<br />

power network. All other sensor nodes have a<br />

battery-operated autarkic power supply (solar panel,<br />

charge controller <strong>and</strong> battery). An additional fuel cell<br />

is installed at the GNSS reference sensor node,<br />

because during winter the solar radiation at this<br />

location is very low. In the following only the GNSS<br />

component of the GSN Aggenalm is described.<br />

Sensor component<br />

To meet harsh environmental conditions, Novatel<br />

Smart Antennas are selected as positioning sensors.<br />

This receiver type is an encapsulated system of<br />

board <strong>and</strong> antenna. See Fig. 2a <strong>for</strong> some<br />

specifications. Two different models are used at<br />

present: older Superstar II receivers with GPS<br />

functionality only; <strong>and</strong> the newer OEMV-1G receivers<br />

providing GPS <strong>and</strong> GLONASS functionality. Besides<br />

code based position, the carrier phase is recorded<br />

<strong>and</strong> can be read-out by the serial port. Depending on<br />

the satellite visibility such a 12/14 channel L1<br />

receiver with a recording frequency of 1Hz generates<br />

about 0.3 0.6MByte of binary data in a time period<br />

of 15min.<br />
