In 270 A.H., Umar bin Hafsun raised his head again and broke the peace<br />

<strong>of</strong> Malaga Hashim bin Abdul Aziz, the Prime Minister <strong>of</strong> Cordova<br />

marched from Cordova to punish Umar bin Hafsun. After some initial<br />

encounters, Hashim contacted Umar bin Hafsun and tried to brine<br />

hrni to reason and made him agree to accompany him to Cordova.<br />

Pnme Munster Hashim was very happy with the bravery <strong>of</strong> Umar bin<br />

Hafsun. He took the matter to Sultan Muhammad and had him<br />

appoint Umar bin Hafsun the Commander-in-chief <strong>of</strong> the Royal Force.<br />

In 271 A.H., Prime Minister Hashim took Umar bin Hafsun and<br />

marched to the North at the head <strong>of</strong> a strong army. The people <strong>of</strong><br />

Saragossa had once again raised their heads and Asturias was also<br />

threatening the peace. Umar bin Hafsun won much acclaim during<br />

these campaigns and both <strong>of</strong> them returned with a large amount <strong>of</strong><br />

booty.<br />

Umar bin Hafsun was not content with the leadership <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islam</strong>ic forces<br />

since, in his present state, he could not hope to establish a Gothic state.<br />

He broke away from Hashim on the way back and went straight to his<br />

old fort. His old friends and supporters joined him there and Umar<br />

bin Hafsun proclaimed his sovereign rule in Malaga. Abdur Rahman<br />

bin Marwan, on the other hand, started plundering Seville and its<br />

suburbs. Sultan Muhammad sent his son Mundhir and Prime<br />

Minister, Hashim to Seville at the head <strong>of</strong> an army. Because <strong>of</strong> these<br />

attacks and the Sultan's being kept busy in other areas Umar bin<br />

Hafsun found time to strengthen his power. Seville and its suburbs<br />

remained under the shadow <strong>of</strong> strife and fighting for about two years.<br />

Finally, peace was bought from Abdur Rahman bin Marwan in 272<br />

A.H. <strong>by</strong> giving away some more territories.<br />

Following this Prince Mundhir was sent to Umar bin Hafsun. Umar<br />

bin Hafsun had now become more civilized and far-sighted. He had<br />

learned a lot from Cordova and Prime Minister Hashim and he was<br />

no longer a robber and bandit. He had now donned the mantle <strong>of</strong> a<br />

ruler. As his first step, he eradicated theft and robbery from the
