Abdur Rahman was one <strong>of</strong> those great men who brought a nation to<br />

life and changed the course <strong>of</strong> history.<br />

Hkham bin Abdur Rahman<br />

Since Abdur Rahman was called Caliph, his son- Hisham and his<br />

descendants can be known as Sultan or Caliph.<br />

Birth<br />

Sultan Hisham bin Abdur Rahman was bom in Shawwal 139 A.H.<br />

after the entry <strong>of</strong> his father into Spain. Hisham's mother, Halal, was<br />

presented as a gift to him <strong>by</strong> the former ruler Yusuf Fihri after<br />

finalizing<br />

a temporary truce. Abdur Rahman married her after freeing<br />

her and he loved her intensely.<br />

Accession<br />

Hisham became the ruler <strong>of</strong> Spain at the age <strong>of</strong> 32 or 33 years <strong>of</strong>. age as<br />

per the will <strong>of</strong> his father. He had been in Merida as Governor when<br />

his father breathed his last. He ascended the throne there and his<br />

name was reiterated in the Friday sermons throughout Spain. His<br />

Brother Abdullah was in<br />

Cordova and he lost no time in occupying<br />

the royal palace and the capital Cordova. His brother Sulaiman was at<br />

the time Governor <strong>of</strong> Toledo. Hisham marched on Cordova and<br />

arrested Abdullah after a short engagement.<br />

He forgave his brother and gave him a large estate and included him<br />

among his ministers and advisors.<br />

Brother's Revolt<br />

Spam was inhabited <strong>by</strong> people <strong>of</strong> varied nature and they could easily<br />

nse in revolt following the death <strong>of</strong> Abdur Rahman. But the deceased<br />

ruler had broken the back <strong>of</strong> these elements so violently that they<br />

could not muster courage to take up arms against the new ruler.<br />

However, Hisham's brothers began to create troubles for him.<br />

sovereignty. Abdullah on the other hand escaped to his brother<br />

bulatman. Sultan Hisham pardoned the fault <strong>of</strong> his brothers and<br />

expected their return to correct behavior.
