The <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong>lslgm<br />

<strong>of</strong> the march <strong>of</strong> Abdur Rahman, Ibn Abdul Wahid fled<br />

to the hills. Abdur Rahman returned to Cordova. He then appointed<br />

Habib bin Abdul Malik as the Governor <strong>of</strong> Toledo and directed him to<br />

punish Ibn Abdul Wahid. Habib bin Abdul Malik deputed Sulaiman<br />

bin Uthman bin Marwan bin Uthman bin Affan to punish Ibn Abdul<br />

Wahid. But the latter captured Sulaiman and killed him. Following<br />

this he captured some near<strong>by</strong> territories.<br />

Having heard this Abdur Rahman himself proceeded from Cordova in<br />

152 A.H. Ibn Abdul Wahid fled to the hills once again and Abdur<br />

Rahman had to return without engagement for the second time.<br />

Abdur Rahman sent his slave Badr in 154 A.H. to attack him but Ibn<br />

Abdul Wahid took refuge in the hills. Later in 154 A.H., Abdur<br />

Rahman himself led an expedition but again could not get him.<br />

In 155 A.H., Abdur Rahman sent Abu Uthman Ubaidullah bin<br />

Uthman at the head <strong>of</strong> a strong army but it proved an exercise in<br />

futility.<br />

Ibn Abdul Wahid killed a large part <strong>of</strong> Abu Uthman's force <strong>by</strong><br />

a trick and plundered several cities as well. Compelled <strong>by</strong> the<br />

situation Abdur Rahman once again led his force in 155 A.H. and<br />

deputed his son Sulaiman in Cordova. When he arrived at the<br />

Santarem fort, he w*s informed that the Yemenite tribes and the<br />

people <strong>of</strong> Seville had revolted against him. He had to leave his task<br />

unfinished and he hurried back. He ordered Abdul Malik bin Umar to<br />

go ahead an attack Seville.<br />

Abdul Malik reached Seville and sent his son Umayyah to snipe at the<br />

enemy. But, finding the people <strong>of</strong> Seville alert, he came back without<br />

oing his job. On inquiry, he gave the reason for his return. Abdul<br />

Malik accused his son <strong>of</strong> coming back for fear <strong>of</strong> death. He then !<br />

charged him with cowardice and cut <strong>of</strong>f his head. Following this he<br />

k*8 men: "We all know how mercilessly we have been<br />

killed and had to leave our country. Now that we have this piece <strong>of</strong><br />

n , Spain, to live on and we can't afford to lose it too. It is our<br />

° **$abon to keep it even at the cost <strong>of</strong> our lives." All <strong>of</strong> them t<br />

supported the idea and vowed to lay down their lives for the purpose.<br />

The Yemenite tribes had a large and strong force in Seville and it was<br />

the last extension <strong>of</strong> their power. Because <strong>of</strong>, this, the conquest <strong>of</strong><br />

Seville was not an easy job. Abdul Malik bin Umar launched a
