from the sway <strong>of</strong> Abu Yazid. The people <strong>of</strong> Kutama came to his help.<br />

However, the people <strong>of</strong> Kutama fled the battlefield when the other<br />

forces, which took the field on behalf <strong>of</strong> Abul Qasim, were beaten. After<br />

that Abu Yazid led his troops up to the fortifications <strong>of</strong> Mahdiya city but<br />

failed to make progress there. At last, Abu Yazid moved back to<br />

Qairwan and Abul Qasim's troops began to snipe at his retreating army.<br />

Death <strong>of</strong> Abul Qasim<br />

Abu Yazid's son Ayub invaded Mahdiya and besieged it in 324 A.H.<br />

During this siege, Abul Qasim died in Mahdiya. Abu Yazid was then<br />

laying siege around Susah city.<br />

Isma'il bin Abul Qasim<br />

Isma'il bin Abul Qasim succeeded his father and entitled himself Al-<br />

Mansur. Isma'il raised the siege <strong>of</strong> Ayub bin Abu Yazid and sent a<br />

contingent to<br />

reinforce the army in Susah. Abu Yazid made an all out<br />

effort to obstruct the launching <strong>of</strong> the enemy fleet but met with failure.<br />

The reinforcing troops landed on the coast and took the battlefield<br />

against Abu Yazid with the active support <strong>of</strong> the people <strong>of</strong> Susah. Abu<br />

Yazid was beaten and his military camp was plundered. He moved to<br />

Qairwan in distress because <strong>of</strong> his defeat, the people <strong>of</strong> Qairwan<br />

turned out his Governor from Qairwan and stopped Abu Yazid from<br />

coming into the city. At the same time they declared their loyalty to<br />

Abul Qasim. Abu Yazid then moved to Sabha. Following this Isma'il<br />

bin Abul Qasim came to Qairwan and consoled the citizens. Abu<br />

invaded Qairwan with a massive army in 334 A.H. Ismail faced<br />

the invasion but conceded defeat after a number <strong>of</strong> encounters.<br />

However, he rebuilt his army in a very short time <strong>by</strong> collecting his<br />

scattered fighters and defeated Abu Yazid after a fierce attack. Abu<br />

Yazid moved to Bejaia, defeated and disappointed and the people<br />

closed the door <strong>of</strong> the city on him. At last, Abu Yazid besieged the city.<br />

Hearing this Isma'il bin Abul Qasim led his army to Bejaia. When Abu<br />
