The <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islam</strong><br />

wearing costly garments and ornaments, were brought to the grave<br />

room to serve the dead man and be his companion in solitude.<br />

Following this, the opening <strong>of</strong> the grave room was firmly closed<br />

leaving the beautiful young girls to die with the dead man. Sultan<br />

Balban ruled over India during the reign <strong>of</strong> Hulagu Khan. Although<br />

he used to keep himself- acquainted with the events and affairs<br />

taking place under Balban he never attacked India. Although some<br />

Mongol Generals invaded India from time to time the credit goes to<br />

their leaders who repulsed their attacks every time. At a time when<br />

the entire world <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islam</strong> was overtaken <strong>by</strong> disturbances and<br />

disruptions, India was one country where the <strong>Islam</strong>ic rule was<br />

strong and mighty and so this country remained safe from the<br />

Mongol's expansionist designs.<br />

Abagha Khan<br />

Shortly after the death <strong>of</strong> Hulagu Khan, the nobles and courtiers<br />

convened a meeting <strong>of</strong> the Mongol celebrities and chose Hulagu Khan's<br />

son Abagha Khan for the<br />

throne. However, Abagha Khan refused the<br />

throne in the absence <strong>of</strong> permission from the Mongol Emperor Kublai<br />

Khan. He yielded to the insistence <strong>of</strong> the Mongol court and came to the<br />

throne on Ramadan 2, 663 A H. He lavished rewards on Mongol<br />

Generals and soldiers and made his brother Bashmut the ruler <strong>of</strong><br />

Shirvan (part <strong>of</strong> modem day Azerbaijan), Mazandaran (historic region<br />

<strong>of</strong> northern Iran, bordering the Caspian Sea on the north) and Khurasan<br />

to his next brother, Teshen. Rome (modem day Turkey) was given to<br />

Tuhan Bahadur, the son <strong>of</strong> Sonjak. The territories near Rome (modem<br />

day Turkey) were given to Turan, the son <strong>of</strong> Jalair Darlakin. Arghun<br />

Aga was given the duties <strong>of</strong> Finance and Khawaja Shamsuddin was<br />

made Prime Minister and Arghun Khan was appointed the instructor<br />

<strong>of</strong> his son Mehrtaq Nawyan Birlas.<br />

Abagha Khan resumed fighting against Berke Khan who died during<br />
