INVESTIGATIONS<br />
METHOD<br />
1 Copy the results table into your notebook, adding<br />
a title and rows as needed.<br />
2 Using a marker, number the test tubes 1–8.<br />
3 Measure 10 mL of each of the mixtures, using a<br />
measuring cylinder, and transfer into the appropriate<br />
test tubes.<br />
4 Observe the mixtures. Record a description of each<br />
in your table.<br />
5 After stirring, record which mixtures separate<br />
upon standing.<br />
6 Make the room as dark as possible, or use an underbench<br />
cupboard. Shine a torch on each mixture<br />
that does not separate upon standing. In your table,<br />
describe if the mixture exhibits the Tyndall effect –<br />
if light is scattered by the fine particles.<br />
7 Classify each mixture as a solution, suspension<br />
or colloid.<br />
