stunned. Untees and Haddi were talking to a number of
people here and there trying to get more information on
the guy. They came back after a solid 15 minutes and
joined the group. Everyone paused and looked at them
expecting some information. Untees started talking
“So bande ka naam hai Gaurav. Kanpur ka launda hai.
He was AIR-81 in JEE. He has seen a lot of ups and
downs in his career. First sem main isne dussa maara
tha. Doosre sem bhi isne Dussa maara tha. Third sem
saale ne 9.6 maari thi. From fourth sem nobody knows
what happened but he has basically come down to
Vodka’s academic level. Somebody there was saying
that he started taking drugs from the fourth semester.
He seems to be attending counseling sessions with
psychiatrists. His condition was definitely less than
ideal.”
This is when one of the faculty members present there
starting gathering the students. It seemed like it was
time for a speech. The group encircled the professor as
he started talking.
“This is the second suicide attempt within the last week.
Fortunately this one did not succeed. I say this not as a
faculty but as a father. Please don’t ever think of doing
something like this. You guys are winners. Irrespective
of how many F’s you get here as soon as you step out
you ARE going to be
successful……..blah…….blah…….blah……….”
Everyone had heard the speech before but the fact of
the matter was that suicides were a part of life in IIT
Kanpur. Every year atleast two or three lives were lost
due to suicides. Some due to bad grades, some due to
botched up love affairs and some due to reasons
unknown.
All of them waited for a full hour before a doctor came
out and updated them with gaurav’s condition.
