Appendix B. Planning, preparing, and
implementing the SAP landscape
After understanding the architecture of an IBM zEnterprise System, you must decide whether
to use the zEnterprise Ensemble or to continue using a discrete system infrastructure for the
SAP landscape. The methods for planning, sizing, and designing the landscape are similar.
However, they differ in configuration details by the individual components chosen for SAP
server roles (installable units), which is also true for the system preparations and the SAP
software installations.
This appendix describes a common approach on how to plan and prepare for a new
infrastructure with the zEnterprise System. This step-by-step approach follows best practices
that were initially developed by the IBM Advanced Technical Support (ATS) team in North
America, and that were adapted to DB2 10 and SAP NetWeaver 7.3. This method covers
planning for the hardware, operating systems, DB2, storage layout, network, and the SAP
NetWeaver installation.
This appendix highlights what to consider when you migrate from an existing SAP system on
IBM System z10 with DB2 9 for z/OS to DB2 10 for z/OS. To take advantage of the full DB2 10
features, additional measures are necessary as explained in this appendix. This appendix
also outlines the sample installation created for this IBM Redbooks publication and the
detailed implementation steps.
This appendix includes the following sections:
► The SAP implementation process from planning to production
► Planning an SAP NetWeaver installation
► System preparation
