System software planning
SAP on the zEnterprise System requires a specific operating system, DB2 for z/OS database,
and communication and utilities software component versions. Additional software is required
for the application server environment alternatives, within the ensemble or in a discrete server
environment. This minimum software is marked as “required” in Table B-7 on page 162. To
improve the system capabilities and system management, additional software can be useful.
This section describes these optional products and their purpose.
Software for the SAP database server
The SAP database server on System z and the zEnterprise System runs on a DB2 for z/OS
database. The z/OS host has the SAP shared libraries installed on zFS and the SCS under
z/OS UNIX System Services. Communication to the application servers routes through TCP
OSD by using the Open Systems Adapters (OSAs) or in memory by using HiperSockets. In a
high available configuration, the database server components, the SCS, and the shared
libraries support the Parallel Sysplex cluster. For implementation details and required
software, see Business Continuity for SAP on IBM System z, SC33-8206-04.
Software for SAP NetWeaver Application Servers
You can choose the application server platform for SAP. Because SAP supports virtualization
on most application server platforms, your physical server can host several logical application
servers. You also can mix SAP NetWeaver AS platforms within the landscape or within one
SAP system. However, this practice is not recommended because it complicates the
environment and the component variations. In the zEnterprise Ensemble of the ITSO lab, we
used Linux on System z servers as guests to z/VM for one system, and AIX under IBM
PowerVM on zBX blades for the other system.
Required software
Table B-7 lists all of the software and licenses that you need to run an SAP solution on
System z or the zEnterprise System. This list is the bare minimum to get a system into
production, although many clients use selected optional software to improve the availability
security, and system management of their system. Ensure that you have all components or
are in the procurement process, and everything is on an SAP supported level.
