2.10.1 IBM zEnterprise z196
The z196 has an upgraded 5.2-GHz system chip, which is the fastest quad-core processor
available in the industry. This processor offers over 100 new instructions and 1.5 MB L2
Cache per core and 24 MB L3 cache per processor chip.
The z196 offers a total of 96 cores and delivers up to 40% performance improvements for
each core. Compared to its predecessor IBM System z10®, the z196 provides up to a 60%
increase in total capacity for z/OS, z/VM, and Linux on System z workloads and holds the
same energy footprint. Customers can configure up to 80 cores as general-purpose
processors (CPs), IFLs, System z Application Assist Processors (zAAPs), zIIPs, additional
system assist processors (SAPs), and Internal Coupling Facilities (ICFs). Alternatively, they
can use the cores as additional spares.
The z196 can scale up over 52,000 millions of instructions per second (MIPS) in a single
footprint. Additionally, it provides up to 3 terabyte (TB) of available real memory per server for
growing application needs with up to 1 TB of real memory per LPAR. In contrast, the z114 has
a 3.8 GHz quad-core processor and provides up to 256 GB of available real memory per
server.
Reduction of total cost of ownership: Total cost of ownership can be reduced by running
SAP NetWeaver ASs that contain business-critical parts on Linux on System z, particularly
on IBM zEnterprise 196. This setup uses the IFL processors and, therefore, reduces costs.
2.10.2 IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension
zBX is an infrastructure component of the zEnterprise System that supports selected IBM
blade servers and workload optimizers. zBX is pre-built for easy integration with the z196 or
z114. A zBX can have up to four frames, containing up to eight BladeCenters, each with up to
14 selected IBM POWER® technology-based or Intel technology-based blades, for a
maximum of 112 blades. This component offers flexible and nearly unlimited scalability in the
application server tier for memory intensive and high-volume SAP workloads.
2.10.3 IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager
The IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager is an integrated System z management
facility for zEnterprise platform management. It is Licensed Internal Code and part of the
Hardware Management Console (HMC).
The Unified Resource Manager can manage workloads across System z, POWER, and
System x from a single point of control and owns the private management network for
hypervisor communication. This dedicated high performance private network connects the
zBX with the z/OS LPARs, which leads to improved performance and throughput. The Unified
Resource Manager provides management for hardware, firmware, and virtualization layers for
IBM PowerVM® on POWER blades, kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) on IBM x86 blades,
and z/VM on System z.
IBM also offers application programming interfaces (APIs) for Unified Resource Manager.
These APIs provide access to the same underlying functions that support the user interface
for Unified Resource Manager.
