1.1 IBM DB2 on System z and SAP
The DB2 database management system with its data sharing capabilities is an important
component of the IBM System z mainframe platform. DB2 for z/OS data sharing means that
one DB2 system can span multiple System z servers. The IBM Parallel Sysplex® technology
allows clustering of up to 32 System z servers and management of them as a single image.
The concept of having several DB2 members and the ability to cluster them into a sysplex is a
fundamental technology for ensuring continuous service at all times.
DB2 on the mainframe is the most sophisticated database in terms of scalability, superior
performance, I/O sharing, near continuous availability, and advanced disaster recovery
techniques for large databases. With the z/OS Security Server (IBM Resource Access
Control Facility (IBM RACF®)), DB2 authorization, and security integration, DB2 provides an
extended security concept and hence a high level of security.
You can easily use all of these characteristics and ultimately improve them by using the
synergies between SAP applications, the underlying System z hardware, and IBM System
Storage® DS8000®. Figure 1-1 shows these synergies.
