1.1 IBM DB2 on System z and SAP The DB2 database management system with its data sharing capabilities is an important component of the IBM System z mainframe platform. DB2 for z/OS data sharing means that one DB2 system can span multiple System z servers. The IBM Parallel Sysplex® technology allows clustering of up to 32 System z servers and management of them as a single image. The concept of having several DB2 members and the ability to cluster them into a sysplex is a fundamental technology for ensuring continuous service at all times. DB2 on the mainframe is the most sophisticated database in terms of scalability, superior performance, I/O sharing, near continuous availability, and advanced disaster recovery techniques for large databases. With the z/OS Security Server (IBM Resource Access Control Facility (IBM RACF®)), DB2 authorization, and security integration, DB2 provides an extended security concept and hence a high level of security. You can easily use all of these characteristics and ultimately improve them by using the synergies between SAP applications, the underlying System z hardware, and IBM System Storage® DS8000®. Figure 1-1 shows these synergies. challenging business environments. For more than 15 years now, DB2 technology has been influenced by SAP. In fact, some database features are specifically for SAP applications. IBM and SAP count thousands of joint customers worldwide, which is also reflected in the more than 1,200 installations running SAP on System z. IBM continues to invest substantially in sustaining System z as the optimal platform for SAP applications. 1.2 SAP solution portfolio 1.2.1 SAP NetWeaver The SAP Business Suite with its underlying architecture supports the vision of “Everywhere (On Device) - Everything (On Demand) - Everytime business service.” SAP Business Suite runs on a server infrastructure (On Premise), which builds the basic layer of the SAP product strategy. SAP NetWeaver is the integration and application platform of SAP, and it serves as the technological base for SAP solutions and the SAP Business Suite. It facilitates the development, execution, and maintenance of business applications from SAP and from business partners and customers. Based on open standards, SAP NetWeaver provides several interfaces to ensure interoperability with other applications and to enable the use of comprehensive software. The application- and process-oriented design is a key differentiator of SAP NetWeaver. The SAP NetWeaver middleware provides two runtime stacks, one for Advanced Business Application Programming (ABAP) and a second one for Java, using the SAP Java Virtual Machine (JVM). SAP NetWeaver is part of several products in the following areas: ► User and Team Productivity ► Information Management ► Business Process Management ► Application Composition ► SOA Middleware ► Foundation Management and Optimization To facilitate all of these areas, SAP NetWeaver includes the following comprehensive set of components and tools: SAP NetWeaver Portal Unifies critical information and applications to provide role-based views that span the enterprise, so that everyone can take full advantage of information resources. SAP NetWeaver Gateway Enables developers to create applications that link business users to SAP software from any environment and through any device. SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management Ensures cross-system data consistency and helps to integrate business processes across the extended value chain. SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse Enables data integration from across the enterprise and transforms data into practical, timely business information to provide a scalable enterprise data warehouse.
