The Word Tetmim, never met with but in this
place, is commonly derived from eAve;;., which
fignifles Trouble or Vanity, and is a Word frequently
applied to Idols, as particularly Be-
thel is ftiled 'Bethaven, upon the accc:.at of the'
Golden Calf there fet up, Hof. iv. 1 5. For thefe
Reafons I underftand the Expreflion here, She
hath wearied her felf with Lies, of the People's
multiplying their Idolatries, Idols being elfewhere
called Lies, and feeking Relief fometimes from one
Idol, fometimes from another, but all in vain. See
Chap. xvi. 29, 30. xxiii. 16, 19,40.

her, &c.] All the Admonitions I gave her by my
Prophets, availed nothing to the purging her from
her Idolatries and other Wickednefs : fo that now
the Fire muft purge and confume her and her Sins.

Ibid. Becaufe I have -purged thee, and thou waft
not purged, &c] I did what was requifite on my
part toward thy Converfion, but thou refuted ft to
comply with thofe frequent Calls and Exhortations
I gave thee, (See the Note on Jer. xxxi. 1 8.) and
therefore my Spirit fhall not ftrive with thee any
longer, but I will proceed to execute my Judgments
upon thee.
