The Words allude to the Trees planted in Para- ^^r^,<br />

dife, and defTgned for Man's Food in the State of<br />

Innocence, and efpecially to the Tree of Life<br />

which grew there : See Ver. 12. and Conip. R#-<br />

vel. xxii. 2.<br />

Ver. 8. Thefe Waters iffue out towards the Eafl- Ver. 8.<br />

Country, and go down into the Defart, and g r ) into<br />

the Sea.'] Thefe Waters are defcribed as taking<br />

their Courfe along the Plain or Champagne Country<br />

(for that is theSenfe of the Word Araba, here<br />

rendred Defart) toward the Lake where Sodom formerly<br />

flood, called the Dead-Sea, and by Mofes,<br />

the Salt-Sea : Comp. Dent. iii. 17. with this Verfe.<br />

Ibid. Which being brought forth into the Sea, the<br />

Waters Jhali be healed.'] This is the Obfervation of<br />

all Writers who defcribe this Lake, that nothing<br />

can live in it : And the Text here tells us, that<br />

thefe living Streams fhall by mixing with thefe<br />

Salt and brackifh. Waters, make them wholefome<br />

and fit for life : Myftically denoting the healing<br />

Vertue of God's Grace to cure the Vices and Corruptions<br />

of wicked Men.<br />

Ver. 9. And it Jhalhome to pafs, that every Ihing Ver. 9.<br />

that liveth, which moveth whither foever the Rivers<br />

Jhall come, fhall live, &c. ] The Metaphor is mil<br />

continued, to this Senfe : That as the Fifli which<br />

move or fwim, (Comp, Gen. i. 20. ) in Waters<br />

cured or made wholefome, have Life and Nou-<br />

riiliment from thence, whereas no Filli can live in<br />

the Dead-Sea : So the Waters which flow from the<br />

Wells of Salvation, 2ls the Prophet Ifaiah exprefles it,<br />

Ifa. xii. 3. fhall make all thofe thrive and multiply<br />
