actin were more frequently detected in malaria patients. CONCLUSIONS: The higher<br />

levels <strong>of</strong> apoptosis observed in cells from P. vivax <strong>and</strong> P. falciparum malaria patients<br />

could contribute to lymphopenia associated to malaria. However, the lack <strong>of</strong> correlation<br />

among apoptosis <strong>and</strong> parasitemia, number <strong>of</strong> past malaria attacks <strong>and</strong> low cellular<br />

response, specially against malaria antigens, suggest that apoptosis associated to<br />

uncomplicated malaria could be a physiological reaction <strong>of</strong> the immune system to<br />

control polyclonal activation <strong>and</strong> maintain the balance <strong>of</strong> these cellular population<br />

densities.<br />
