Conclusion: In this study, we established a murine model and the kinetics of
the inflammatory parameters that follow lethal S. pneumoniae infection. We
show that inflammation was an important determinant of morbidity after infection
with S. pneumoniae as seen by the large neutrophil influx, protein leakage and
cytokine production during infection. Pretreatment of mice with Rolipram
partially decreased several parameters of the inflammatory response without
interfering with bacterial load suggesting that partial blockade of pulmonary
inflammation may be beneficial for the host.
