Phrygian Aslantafl Rock Monument.
Greeks learned how to play the flute from the Phrygians and named the
flutists ‘Phrygians’. Western sources state that Midas sent his throne
“on which he sat and spread justice and which was spectacularly
beautiful” to the prophecy center of Delphoi, thus establishing good
relations with Greece and marrying the princess of Kyme, an Aiolian
city in Western Anatolia.
Again, we learn from the Assyrian sources that he had a close
relationship with Pisiris who was the principal of the Late Hittite city
Carchemish, with Ambaris who was the principal of Tabal, with Matti of
Atuna as well as the Urartian King Rusa I. His biggest rival was the
Assyrian King Sargon II (721-705 BC), a contemporary of his. In the annuals
Sargon commissioned to be written on the walls of his palace in
his capital Khorsabad, the name of Midas is cited, where he says, “In
the fifth year of my regency, Pisiris of Carchemish sent messages to
Mita of the land of Mushki to the effect that he acts in a hostile manner
towards Assyria,” and also included there is, “Ambaris of Tabal sent a
messenger to Rusa of Urartu and Mita of Mushki to propose to take my
territories”. It becomes clear from these epitaphs too, that Midas was
closely interested in the east.
