huge seated statues, the heads of which have fallen at some time. The figures
shown here include the heads of lions and eagles, but also the heads of
Antiochos, Tyche-Zeus, Apollo and Herakles on the eastern terrace.
contains an inscription stating that it was built in the 3 rd century AD,
for S. Severus, his wife Domna I and their two sons. This shows that
the region retained its importance during the Roman Period. The
fortress known as the 'New Fortress', situated in the village of old
Kahta, on Mt. Nemrud, 26 km. outside Kahta, contains, at its
summit, the palace of the Commagene. The present remains date
from the Mameluke Period.
At the sacred place built by Antiochos I on the summit of Nemrud
are three terraces that were cut into the rock to the east, west and
north. On the western side of the eastern terrace are numerous
giant sculptures resting on a tall podium and opposite these figures
is the now restored stepped altar. To the south and north of the
terrace is surrounding by a low wall, built on a long and narrow base.
