grace became characteristics of Lydia and this school experienced its
brightest period during Kroisos. The embossments in the Temple of
Kybele in Sardes give us an insight into this art. In the small arts of the
Lydians, ivory carving and gold craftsmanship took a great precedence.
The gifts left at grave sites are important in that they enlighten us about
jewelry and works of gold. These were small embellished plates, rosettes,
buttons and golden cords adorning the clothing of the dead. Golden plates
were created in the impression technique and were embellished.
The fifty golden earrings found in Sardes indicate that the women of
Sardes were fond of their beauty. Furthermore, the Karun Treasures,
which were found in Uflak and smuggled to America, were returned
afterwards to the Uflak museum. They constitute a very beautiful
collection which displays the high quality of works of gold in Lydian art.
Golden collars, earrings and bracelets as well as necklaces made of beads
enriched with gold, are important pieces of this section.
Besides golden items, some silver pieces contained in this treasure such
as cups, vases, and stones are examples of the high success of the
Lydians in this art. Colored wall pictures obtained during the excavations
together with multi-colored terra-cotta panels decorating the exterior of
the buildings have revealed another distinct art of the Lydians.
